I Shall Not Live in Vain:
There are strangers on the space station, who arrived by the hypergate on the lower level. Kix didn’t even know the thing worked! It makes him nervous. Is this some new Sith trap? Is the station comprised? Has the First Order realized that the Resistance is using this station as a waypoint before hiding Force Sensitive younglings on Lira San? What would the First Order do with a working hypergate?
Kix isn’t sure how much he needs to worry about that last thought. If the strangers’ stories are to be believed, this might be that the hypergate only works this one time. The strangers are saying that a hypergate needs another hypergate to connect to and the only one Kix knows about is the one on this space station. Still, their story seems convenient. They’re all Human and originally from a planet called Earth. They were on a different planet that was being attacked, so they accidently traveled by hypergate, which they call a stargate, to a ship called Destiny. They have no control over the ship’s flight path, but it opens hypergates at intervals so they can acquire supplies. They don’t have credits and very little to barter with.
Kix isn’t sure how much of what he’s heard is truth and how much is the standard station rumor mill blowing things out of proportion. At least Taka and Jacen are already off the station and on their way to Lira San.
Kix is sure that Kidd Kareen will try to help. He’s also sure Kidd won’t put the Resistance cell he helps support in danger, not on purpose anyway. Chopper’s opinion is more dire: he uses mostly cuss words to describe their current predicament. Kix is just relieved he isn’t the only Resistance member on base.
Kidd is the owner, and establisher, of one of the stations many parts and repair shops, but his is the only one that’s also a bar. When he and Chopper get there Kix only spots two Humans he doesn’t recognize. One is working as a waiter. He’s younger, with a kind smile and pretty eyes. He glances over when they walk in, accesses them quickly, then goes back to his conversation with Codi, a Togruta who’s enjoying a mid-day meal. The other Human is sitting at the bar describing something to Kidd. He’s older, with facial hair and shoulder length hair. He’s got a cup of caf sitting in front of him. He pauses to bring the cup to his face and breathe in the smell. His eyes close and a smile plays at his lips before he takes a long drink. Caf addict. Do they even have caf on Destiny? Kix grimaces in sympathy.
“Hey Kix,” Kidd greets. “Hi Chopper.”
“Hi Kidd,” Kix smiles. Chopper blats a greeting too.
“Still not fair that you’re younger than me,” Kidd teases.
“Careful,” Kix tosses back. “I might have to tell the Commander you were flirting with me.”
“You’d break my heart like that?” Kidd continues.
The man looks up from his caf. “Commander?”
It’s the in Kix needs to talk to one of the Destiny crew. He needs to see how much they know about the current state of the universe they’ve found themselves in. He needs to make sure they’re not a threat. He also needs to make sure they haven’t already sided with the First Order.
“Kidd used to be a famous podracer during the Clone Wars,” Kix explains as he takes a seat near the man.
“Unfortunately, one of my crew turned out to be a spy,” Kidd says. “The battalion Kix served with sent a team to find the spy. His Commander and I became friends.”
“Friends?” Kix questions.
“We’re friends now,” Kidd grins.
“You flirt with her every time you see her,” Kix laughs. “And you kissed her.”
“We were teenagers!” Kidd defends. “Besides I don’t continue to flirt unless the person I’m flirting with starts to flirt back.”
“You knew him when you were a teenager?” the man asks as he turns to take Kix in. “Time Travel?”
“Frozen,” Kix says. What is Earth like if this man’s first instinct is to ask about time travel? “I’m Kix.”
“Doctor Rush,” the man says.
Before Kix can steer their conversation in the direction he wants, Rush turns his attention to Chopper. He finishes his caf and slides off his chair so he can peer down at Chopper. “I’ve seen these around. Would you be able to answer a few questions about them?”
Then he reaches out to touch. Chopper whirls back with a loud reprimand. He bends one of his arms so it’s touching his chassis and then waves the other as he tells Rush not to touch him and ask him questions directly, not another person.
“Remarkable,” Rush comments.
“You understand Binary?” Kidd asks.
“Binary?” Rush asks as he straightens to look at Kidd. “My translator doesn’t seem to be working for this machine.”
“Astromech!” Chopper warbles. “Kix! Tell him I’m an astromech and to stop being an insulting asshole!”
“His name’s Chopper,” Kix says. “He’s an astromech.”
Rush tilts his head, squatting down so he can inspect Chopper at eyelevel. Kidd groans and puts his head in his hands. Kix winces. He really doesn’t want to have to get between an insulted Chopper and a guy he’s supposed to find out more about for the good of the Resistance.
“Doc!” the guy, who’s talked Kidd into a short-term waiting job, interjects. “I’m trying to earn credits here. Can you please not insult Chopper?”
“Insult?” Rush demands incredulously as he stands and glares. “Becker, do you really think you’ll earn enough credits to do any good for the ship?”
“I might be able to buy some fruit for the ship,” Becker says.
“Fruit?” Rush questions. “You’re interrupting me for fruit? This is a possible artificial intelligence over here and you want me to stop examining it for fruit?”
“He Doc,” Becker groans. “Chopper is a he.”
“Private,” Rush starts.
Before Rush can get any farther Kix steps in between Chopper and Rush as he points out, “Chopper is not going to want to be examined.”
Chopper agrees with Kix, loudly. Rush looks around Kix to look down at Chopper. Chopper blats an insult at him.
“He’s devolved into swearing now,” Kix says.
“Fascinating,” Rush comments.
Becker groans.
“What kind of fruit were you looking for,” Codi distracts.
“Anything edible that would have seeds,” Becker answers. “We had seeds and have some planters started, but some fruit we could eat now and also grow would go a long way to keeping the health of the crew up.”
Does Destiny have so few supplies that they’re in danger of the crew getting scurvy?
“If you got your fruit, what else would you want?” Codi continues.
Kix shares a smile with Kidd. Between Codi and Kidd the word will spread about what Becker is hoping to get for himself and his crew. He’ll get tips in credits, but the crowd after Codi is likely also going to tip him in the things he’s deciding he needs. Kix has seen this station rally like that behind someone before.
Rush turns to Kidd. “Is there another astromech that would be more amendable to being examined?”
“Do you mean find you a droid that won’t stick up for themselves like Chopper?” Kidd asks incredulous. “I already gave you a free cup of caf and Kix kept the droid from murdering you.”
“Murder?” Rush questions, clear puzzlement in his voice. “He’s capable of murder.”
Chopper preens that he is.
“He’s a veteran of two wars,” Kix warns.
“I suppose you are too,” Rush asks.
“I slept through one,” Kix answers.
“A regular sleeping beauty,” Rush comments. For a moment Kix is ready to step aside and let Chopper ram the guy. It hurts to think off all the people he’d loved that were dead when he was finally thawed out. Waking up surrounded by pirates had been a shock. He’s steadier now, but he doesn’t need that trauma brought up.
Kix desperately needs a subject change. “You’re not a medical doctor, are you?”
“If you need a medical doctor, why did you come to a bar?” Rush frowns.
“I wanted to say hi to Kidd,” Kix manages. “I happen to be a medic so I thought I’d try to check in with one your crews’ medical personnel. I don’t have much in the way of additional supplies, but I might be able to assist in scrounging some up for cheap.”
“I can help you locate Lieutenant Johansen if you can get Chopper to answer some questions,” Rush offers.
“TJ said she was going to the med bay,” Becker puts in.
“She might have already left,” Rush puts in. “I can help locate her if she has.”
“I’ll put up with him,” Chopper grumbles.
“You only have one?” Kix asks in horror.
“One medic, yes,” Rush confirms.
Chopper blats a complaint about how the Resistance is going to lose Kix to Destiny.
“Maybe,” Kix admits.
“Is Fulcrum on her way?” Chopper asks.
Kix gives Chopper an affirmative hand sign.
“Which droid is with her?” Chopper asks.
“Ar-Six,” Kix says.
“Ar-Six, might want to go too. They like adventure,” Chopper decides. “I’m not leaving Jacen or Hera.”
“You’d explain to them?” Kix asks.
“I can do that,” Chopper warbles solemnly.
“Thanks Chop,” Kix says as he runs his knuckles over the top of Chopper’s chassis.
“What are you talking about?” Rush asks.
“Which astromechs might crave adventure,” Kix grins.
“Really?” Rush looks hopeful, almost excited. “The ship needs multiple repairs that we could use assistance on, but I’m not sure what an astromech is capable of.”
“Why does he have to actually say something interesting!” Chopper complains as he rolls towards the door.
“What did he say?” Rush asks. “Is there a machine that will translate?”
“Yeah, there’s a program that will translate Binary. I’m not sure if your system is comparable, but it can be put on a datapad,” Kix answers as he follows Chopper out of the bar, with Rush nearby. “Chopper like maintenance and repair so he likely has some ideas. What problems is the ship having?”
Kix grins. He’s going to be able to get all the information he needs.
