A Parting Kiss:
The Amazons agree to take Helen in. Zari knew they would. Her disappearing fit conveniently. It should be easy, drop her off, feel good about Helen finding a new life where there aren’t any men to fall under the whatever it is she does, then go back to the ship and see if her teammates are mad at her, and then continue with the mission. Except the sand is almost soft under her bare toes and the water is very blue, but also very clear. There’s a light breeze. The most beautiful woman she’s ever met is asking her to stay.
Helen reaches out and takes her hand. Zari squeezes her hand. She tries closing her eyes, but the scent of the ocean still calls to her. Their fingers intertwine.
“You’re going to say no,” Helen says, voice resigned.
“I want to say yes,” Zari admits. “I want to, but that’s not fair to either of us. I helped you so you’re feeling grateful, but starting a new life is difficult. I know just how difficult it is. We don’t really know each other. I’d be staying for all the reasons you feel the need to get away from those men.”
“What I do doesn’t affect…oh, you’re saying I’m beautiful and you’re attracted to me.”
“Now I feel awkward,” Zari admits. She lets herself look at the ocean again: the smell, the sound, the soft taste of salt on her tongue. How long has it been since she just stood on a beach and been able to enjoy it? She sighs, “I’m also still learning the rules of time travel. I haven’t figured out how to save my family yet and staying would feel like giving up on them.”
The words seem to hang there between them. Zari meant to make another joke or flirt a little, not tell Helen an honest and naked truth about herself, but Helen should know, especially when she’s asking her to stay. She can’t give up on her parents or Behrad. She can’t. The more she finds out about time travel though, the more she thinks she won’t find a way to save them. It’s exhausting to think about. It’s tempting to stay here, to give herself a break. To enjoy this beach with Helen.
Except she can’t give up on her parents and Behrad. Also she needs to return the jump ship.
“A kiss goodbye then?” Helen asks. “For my hero?”
Hero. It’s on the tip of Zari’s tongue to say she’s not, she’s only just starting to try and be one, but no, she’s not going to contradict Helen when, if she’d been in the same position as Helen and someone brought her to Themyscira, she’d feel they were a hero too. Helen squeezes her hand and steps close.
“I…” Zari manages. “Yes? Yes.”
Helen laughs lightly and they both lean in. Helen’s fingers graze over her one cheek, cup her face. They keep their one hand firmly intertwined. Zari’s other hand comes up to rest on Helen’s hip. Their lips brush, gently at first and then more firmly. Helen takes control of the kiss, her tongue parting Zari’s lips. Zari moans and presses close, even as she sucks on Helen’s tongue which makes Helen give an answering moan.
She suddenly very much wants to stay.
Helen’s hand skims from her cheek and down her arm as they continue to kiss.
She’s going to end up spending the night in Helen’s brand new room if Helen keeps touching her with these maddening almost feather light touches while kissing her so deeply.
Zari makes herself pull away, untangle slowly. She wets her lips. She wants nothing more than to drag Helen back in and continue making out with her.
“Communication device,” she manages. “I believe the jump ship has a spare communication device that would allow us to stay in contact.”
“You can continue your mission and we can get to know each other,” Helen surmises.
“It’s an idea,” Zari agrees.
“It’s one I like,” Helen smiles. “Let’s go to the jump ship and find one and maybe my hero will allow me one more kiss goodbye.”
“You know,” Zari grins. “I think I will.”
