Bargaining and Banter:

“I can’t approve this,” Rodney tells him as he holds up his tablet and sits down across from him.

Radek saves his work and frowns at Rodney trying to parse out what he means. Rodney’s looking down at his tablet again, brow furrowed as he scrolls. Radek waits a beat for Rodney to clarify, but when he doesn’t Radek points out, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“What?”

Radek sighs through his nose. Trust Rodney to have already moved on. “You need to clarify what you can’t approve.”

“You don’t have to get snippy,” Rodney chides.

“I have started swearing yet.”

“You mean you haven’t started disparaging my intelligence in Czech yet,” Rodney mutters as he touches something on his tablet. Then he looks up. “Why am I taking care of all my mundane paperwork? It’s going to end up dampening my brilliant mind.”

Radek leans back slightly, attempting not to smirk. Now he has an idea of what Rodney is talking about. “You don’t do most of the mundane paperwork, Dr. Kusanagi and I usually take care of it, but you still have to approve certain things for them to get done, so what can’t you approve?”

Rodney raises his eyebrows with a disappointed look. Radek snorts.

“You haven’t said,” Radek points out. “I don’t want to make assumptions.”

“You already know.”

“Do I?”

“This is a waste of time,” Rodney points out as he looks back down at the tablet.

“Only because you’re making it one.”

Rodney gives him the look of annoyance that statement deserves. Radek grins smugly in a way that says he knows that he’s right. Finally, Rodney gives in. “You and Major Lorne can’t take the same day off.”

“Do you want me to point out the hypocrisy in that statement or do you want to explain why?” Radek prods. The verbal sparring was fun, for a moment, but not if it doesn’t get his time off approved.

Rodney groans and leans his head back. “You’re going to make me say it. I don’t want to.”

Radek tilts his head, studying Rodney. “Do you need a nutrition bar?”

“I’m not hypoglycemic,” Rodney protests.

“You’re being testy and not making much sense,” Radek reasons. “When was the last time you ate?”

“When was the last time you had something other than coffee?” Rodney shoots back.

Radek tilts his empty coffee mug with a mournful noise before opening his desk and pulling out a nutrition bar to toss at Rodney. Rodney snatches it up and opens it. He almost takes a bite and then stops.

“I want my time off,” Radek pushes.

“Both second in commands taking off at the same time…how did you become my second in command?” Rodney frowns, then takes a bite of the bar.

“You respect my intelligence,” Radek informs him.

“I do not.”

“You do.”

Rodney sighs and admits. “You’re good to bounce ideas off of.”

“The only one that protested was Kavanagh,” Radek points out. “And he was outvoted.”

“There was a vote?” Rodney scowls, as if he’s trying to decide if Radek’s joking or not.

“Semantics.”

“Anyway,” Rodney continues, waving the earlier conversation away. “You’re the second-in-command and Lorne is the second-in-command and if you both take time off together you might do work in your downtime and…”

He pauses as if he doesn’t want to say the next words. He takes a bite of the bar. Radek waits.

“Teyla informs me that we think better if we’re rested,” Rodney finishes.

“Probably Heightmeyer too,” Radek comments.

Rodney makes a face saying he agrees.

“Rodney, not everyone is a workaholic.”

“You’re not?” Rodney asks, face serious.

“Only when there’s an emergency,” Radek starts.

Rodney raises his eyebrows.

“Or we’re really close to a new discovery,” Radek huffs out.

“You’re as bad as I am,” Rodney protests.

“I’ll still take my day off!”

“Why does it have to be at the same time as Lorne?”

“We already found people to cover, you won’t have extra paperwork,” Radek points out.

“I better not,” Rodney agrees before he finishes the bar.

“Cohesion?” Radek tries. “We spend time off together then we’ll have more cohesion when we work together.”

“Really?”

“You have movie nights with your gate team for the same reason,” Radek reminds.

“You’re not on his gate team.”

“We do work together to make work easier for both you and Sheppard,” Radek reasons.

“What are you two actually going to do?” Rodney asks.

“How is that any of your business?”

Rodney frowns, considers, then tries, “I’m asking as a friend?”

“That’d be more convincing if it was a statement and not a question.”

“Fine. I’m asking as a friend, what are you and Lorne going to do on your joint day off?” Rodney tries again.

“He likes to cook and I like to play board games,” Radek tries. He’s absolutely not going to tell Rodney how good Evan is at chess because then the other scientists will try to talk Evan into playing chess more and Evan only likes to play occasionally.

“Board games?” Rodney asks as he checks something on the tablet. “Dr. Kusanagi is working so she can’t join you for Monopoly.”

“She is competitive about Monopoly,” Radek nods.

“She kicked our asses,” Rodney grouses.

“She did,” Radek agrees.

Rodney sighs. “Fine, I’m going to approve this, but if I find out you two were working I won’t approve you taking time off together again!”

“I appreciate your caring for my mental health,” Radek teases.

Rodney snorts.

Radek frowns at the chess board, trying to decide on his next move. Absently he digs his spoon into the cupcake Evan’s made in mugs for them. He takes a bite and enjoys it as he considers his next move. He sighs. “You’re going to win.”

Evan laughs. “We’ve barely started.”

“You’re winning. I’m going to lose.”

“With that attitude, maybe,” Evan concedes.

Radek frowns.

“Want to try a different game?” Evan suggests.

Radek glances at the different games he’s borrowed. “Catan?”

“I’ve never played Ticket-To-Ride,” Evan points out before taking a bite of his own cupcake.

“I haven’t either,” Radek admits.

Evan grins. Radek feels himself relax. He wanted to try a new game anyway.
