The last time I saw The Shawshank Redemption I suddenly for the first time realize it could be taken as a very sweet love story. I'd never realized that before, but it's actually very gay and comes across as a love story. Then I read Love the One You're With by James Earl Hardy and imagine my surpise when the protagonist goes on a date and see that movie and he and his date discuss the gayness of the movie. I had to share. It's only four paragraphs because I wouldn't want to ruin the book for anyone who might read it.
“My only problem was the Disney-esque ending. I mean, they meet ont his sanyd beach to live happily ever after?”
“Uh…I got the feeling they were lovers.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. There never was anything overtly sexual about their dealings or between anyone in the movie, and that’s unbelievable. I mean, you’re a lifer, there’s little to no change of your getting out, and you don’t have a boy, a mate, a lover? I think their connection went beyond just friendship, but showing that might’ve turned it into a very different movie.”
