So far this year I've posted 34 fics, ficlets, and drabbles. I participated in 13 fic exchanges and defaulted on one of them. I picked up two pinch hits, one for an exchange I hadn't signed up for and one that I took entirely too long to write. I wrote two fics for Big Bangs/Mini Bangs, both of them Bucky Barnes/Clint Barton. OMG is that pairings fandom nice! I posted six fics for the fandomweekly challenge. I also posted two fics for Mick Rory Appreciation Week. The longest fic I wrote was 12,693 words. I also ran the Power Rangers Femslash exchange, we had 8 fics this year! I also won Nano this year!!! I started going to a writing group regularly this year and it's been amazing!
At this point I'm signed up to do one exchange next year. I'd like to participate in more of the tumblr week challenges. I started a lot of fic from prompts from these challenges, but never actually finished them enough to post. Any suggestions for exchanges/challenges/mini or big bangs I should consider?
The character I posted the most fic about was Mick Rory from The Flash/Legends of Tomorrow. We don't get many canonically mentally ill characters that talk about seeing their therapist and yes he usually references this in a joke, but I'm sure with a diagnosis of pyromania he's likely seen a therapist at some point. The interesting thing for me, with this character, especially in Legends of Tomorrow, is how manic the character was, with occasional grandiosity, in the first season and then he's was depressed for much of the second season. He was also grieving. How often do we get to see a character's grief prolonged beyond a single episode or two? Do I think the writers intended to write him as bipolar? No, but an argument could be made. Honestly I could probably write a lot of meta on this character from a psych nurse pov. I'm also wanting to start reading the comics as I've mostly only read Marvel in the past.
I think my favorite fics from this year would be Two Good Liars which is a Doc/Dolls post S1 Wynonna Earp fic and Pranks and First Kisses which is a remix of Rev's Jordan/Troy fic, which you can find here. It's a really fun fic and if you like Megaforce you should check it out. The original is from Jordon's pov and I changed it around to Troy's and Jake's pov.
The pairing that most surprised me this year was Kara/Mick. I wrote Light Up Every Room for the DCCW Rarepair exchange. It was interesting deciding where to combine Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow after the crossover. Since the two characters live in different universes I needed a plausible reason for one of them to want to move to the other's universe. Hence Mick having post brainwashing fears, time pirate problems, and having hidden his worlds versions of Superman and Supergirl. There were pages of notes from rewatching the TV shows and plotting where and how these two would come together. I really liked that I had Kara reach out to Mick after battling her worlds version of Len and Mick, while then coming up with a reason they'd be in National City.
Things I worked on this year was to get better at plotting out my fic before I write it. This is essential in the longer fics so that I have an idea of where I'm going, where I need to get to, and how I plan to get from point A to point B. I've also worked on being more descriptive. For A Best Friend Promise a Lightspeed Rescue Fic where Chad and Kelsey explore Yosemite I would have pictures from my trip to Yosemite nearby to look at while I was writing. For Flirting in Formal Wear a Bucky/Clint fic where Bucky realizes he's interested in Clint after seeing him dressed up several times I looked up several pictures of ties and bowties. I also looked up a dress for Natasha and one of the bowties I decided on for Tony inspired the description of a dress Pepper was wearing. The picture that inspired this fic was by Lasenby_Heathcote and is a really gorgeous picture of Clint and Bucky in formal wear, it can be found here.
When I first started writing I was very conscious about my dialogue. I usually feel comfortable writing dialogue, because having a character talk about something that is affecting their world is a way of showing instead of telling that I enjoy. I still feel my use of descriptions in fic could use some work.
