A Girls Night:

“It’s just such bullshit!” Lisa declares from where she’s lounging on a medical bed. TJ attempts to tune back into the conversation. She’s holding a warm mug near her nose, taking careful sips of the tea inside. It’s made from a herb they found on one of the planets Destiny let them go to. Thankfully, shortly after arriving, she and Becker had found a scanner in the medical bay that would look at most vegetation they put in it and tell them if it was edible or not, while also listing what it can be used for. This tea should help with her morning sickness and doesn’t taste bad, but TJ is still only taking careful sips.

“You can just swear,” Vanessa says. “We definitely are used to stronger cuss words than bullshit, especially since we’re stuck in the ass end of the universe. We won’t judge you Park. Back me up Johansen.”

“It’s crap,” TJ agrees.

Vanessa snorts.

TJ smirks.

Lisa rolls her eyes. “Exactly, it’s bullshit. I’m exhausted. We are working to maintain this ship and try and bring it up to speed if we have to stay here long term, while at the same time not making it comfortable because we’re for sure going to find a way home, so when we finally get time off we’re not treating the ship like it’s our home now. Instead we use the communication stones to either wallow in what we lost or attempt to pick up skills that can help us out here. And while I’m all for picking up skills, sometimes I need rest.”

“Home?” Vanessa ventures.

“If we’re going to be here long term then this is our home,” Lisa elaborates. “Shouldn’t it start to have some of the comforts?”

“Becker is trying,” TJ puts in.

“Girls night?” Vanessa asks. “It sounds like you’re proposing a girls night, but I don’t know how we’re going to do that.”

“Popcorn would be good,” TJ sighs.

“Or pizza,” Vanessa puts in.

“Movies,” Lisa moans.

They can get all using the communication stones, but if they tried that then they’d have to leave one of them on the ship. Also things taste different when you’re borrowing another person’s body. It also wouldn’t help make the ship feel like home.

“We are not doing each other's nails,” Vanessa decides. “First I suck at it, second that whole cleaning what few nail kits we have takes forever.”

“At least we have some, but I agree, not nails,” TJ agrees.

“We can’t binge eat either,” Lisa sighs.

They all sigh. TJ would love to be able to eat easily right now. She takes another sip of her tea, then listens to Vanessa and Lisa continue to throw out ideas of what they are no longer able to do. It’s not really negative, but there’s a gallows humor to it.

In the end they toss two mattresses together on the floor of Vanessa’s room since her’s is slightly larger and TJ’s room is across the hall. They brush each other’s hair and talk about the movies they’d all recently seen. They take their time describing plot, the actors, costumes, sometimes they even go into the themes of the movies. They give each other strange hair styles, attempting to make each other laugh with the silly ways they each can make each other's hair look. They all agree that Megan Fox is hot, but they can’t decide if they would watch Jennifer’s Body again. They’d seen ads for Avatar before they left, but all decide they’re not sure what the plot is going to be.

“It’s going to just be so much CGI,” Vanessa says, wrinkling her nose. “And I don’t like the 3-D stuff, it makes my head feel wonky.”

They decide that they all liked Push and The Fast and the Furious. They debate which one might turn into a franchise. They agree that both of them should get a sequel. They disagree on Star Trek. Lisa’s feelings on it are mixed, but then she likes the TV show and previous movies. Vanessa thought it was fine.

TJ shrugs when they look at her. “Karl Urban is hot?”

Lisa snorts, “That’s a good answer.”

“And an opinion I can agree with,” Vanessa laughs.

“I was looking forward to Sherlock Holmes,” Lisa complains.

“Who’s in this one?” TJ asks. They must be making another movie.

"Roberty Downey JR and Jude Law,” Vanessa answers. “It comes out in December.”

“Can always use the communication stones,” TJ suggests.

“That would be actually using my downtime as downtime,” Lisa considers.

None of them suggest they might be back on Earth by December. That’s not likely to happen at this point. December is too close. They won’t have figured out a way home by then. It’s a sobering thought. TJ sighs. Vanessa elbows her. TJ winces, then shoves Vanessa. Vanessa laughs. “No, TJ, we’re having fun.”

Her nickname and not her last name, a reminder that they’re friends and that they currently have no expectations on their shoulders. TJ feels herself relax a fraction more. She sighs and wraps her arms around Vanessa’s shoulder. Vanessa lays back and takes TJ with her. TJ wraps around her more firmly as Vanessa reaches out and grabs Lisa’s elbow. Lisa lets herself be encouraged into a cuddle. It takes a moment to get comfortable, but eventually they settle with Vanessa between them.

“Did either of you see The Proposal?” Vanessa asks.

“It was hilarious,” TJ laughs. It feels like the first time she’s laughed in a long time. She buries her face against Vanessa’s shoulder and sighs. Vanessa pats her hand.

“I didn’t,” Lisa admits. “I don’t even think I saw, wait is that the romantic comedy with Betty White?”

“Yes!” Vanessa enthuses. “She’s hilarious.”

TJ isn’t sure if she wants to add her agreement or say the move was hilarious.

“Okay,” Lisa says, the anticipation obvious in her tone. “Tell me about this movie.”

Vanessa laughs. TJ shifts so she can grin at Lisa. This is going to be fun and it almost feels like a bit of normalcy in a situation that is anything but normal.
