Catching Up:

When Ahsoka lands back in the real world it feels different. She expects not to feel Kanan, she saw him die, but Ezra feels faint, as if there's a large distance between them. She can't sense Cassian. She can’t sense Vader either, not even when she tries, cautiously, to reach for him mentally There's also a vague feeling that Kanan isn't the only fellow Force sensitive she's lost and there's an emptiness to the universe. The universe always feels empty now, but this rings of more death on a massive scale.

She gives herself a moment to feel the emptiness, to adjust to it’s new depths. Then she concentrates on her breathing and how the air feels expanding her lungs, then how the air feels leaving her body. She takes the time to catalogue her body and how it feels to be in her body.

Then she picks herself up, dusts herself off, before setting out to find a way to signal the Rebellion that she’s still alive. Then she can figure out where everyone is, who she’s lost, and why Ezra feels so sad and distant.

Kallus approaches her. He's brimming with suspicion, that he's using to tamp down his hope. He stares at her, lowering his weapons slowly. "Jarrus and Bridger said you were dead. They said Vader killed you."

"He tried, but Ezra used a Jedi trick to come back and save me."

“That’s convenient,” Kallus comments in a carefully even tone.

They exchange several codes, codes she taught him, before they even sent Cassian to check on him and try to train him, but eventually Kallus gives a small precise nod and asks if she has anything she needs to bring with her.

Chopper is with the shuttle. His greeting is loud and full of excitement. Ahsoka laughs as she kneels to give him a hug. “And how have you been, still causing mayhem?”

“We got to blow up a Death Star,” Chopper brags.

:”Help blow up,” Kallus corrects.

“A Death Star?” Ahsoka asks carefully.

Kallus’ face does something complicated and she can feel the way he suddenly goes hesitant. He’s not sure how to catch her up with everything she’s missed. She’s already looked up the year, she knows how long she’s been ‘not dead,’ but she hadn’t looked up major events yet. She thought it would be easier to ask among friends.

“Hera’s a general now,” Chopper brags, a clear purposeful subject change to keep her attention and give Kallus a moment to work out what he wants to say next. Ahsoka gives Chopper her attention and asks about Hera as Kallus sets in the coordinates and sends them into hyperspace. Ahsoka asks about Hera, Sabine, Zeb and through asking about them she determines that Ezra sacrificed himself to save Lothal.

“He’s still alive. He’s sad and very distant, but he’s alive,” Ahsoka says. “How’s Lothal?”

“Sabine’s there now,” Kallus says. “We keep at least one person there still.”

“Still?” Ahsoka asks.

“We won,” Kallus reveals.

Won? The universe doesn’t feel as if they’ve won. It’s still so very empty.

“You came back at an opportune time,” Kallus continues. “We’re just starting to build the New Republic.”

There are so many questions to ask. Kallus waits, gives her a moment to sort her thoughts. She likely needs him to start at the beginning, tell him everything she missed. “How did Cassian die?”

He’d been so young when they met on a Rebel base and he started following her around, determined that he was going to learn everything he could from her, determined that he was going to grow up to be a spy. She’s going to miss him.

Kallus feels like shock and sadness. He didn’t expect that question. “You can tell?”

Ahsoka nods. She knows that gives Kallus more questions, but he answers hers, telling her about Scarif and the Death Star, which leads to telling her about Alderaan and Yavin, then the second Death Star. It’s impossible sometimes not to think about all the times Anakin and Palpatine almost died during the Clone Wars, it’s impossible not to wonder how the universe would be different if they had.

“Has anyone found Kix yet?” She asks. They haven’t, not yet.

“We need to find Ezra, if he’s with Thrawn,” Kallus redirects. Kix might not have been frozen. He could easily be dead, but Ezra is alive. She’ll at least need to tell Hera that, to give her that hope.

“Hera has a kid,” Chopper says fondly. “You’ll get to meet Jacen!”

“Did she adopt again?” Ahsoka guesses.

“She was pregnant when Kanan died.”

“Jacen,” Ahsoka says, feeling out his name. Kanan had another son, one he never got to meet. “Is he Force sensitive?”

“Yes!” Chopper answers.

Kallus hesitates. Ahsoka tilts her head. Kallus sighs through his nose. “I should probably tell you about the pilot that blew up the first Death Star.”

Ahsoka frowns, why is he hesitating? Chopper gives a worried whirl and that concerns Ahsoka more. What could be so important about a pilot that isn’t Hera, that it’s making Chopper worried about her reaction?

“Do you know who Vader was?” Kallus asks.

“Yes, it’s why I stayed and tried to fight him.”

“We thought he killed you,” Kallus comments.

Ahsoka closes her eyes and takes a slow breath. Kanan is dead so she can’t reassure him, but hopefully she can get ahold of Rex soon. Ahsoka stills.

“Rex? Is Rex still alive?”

“He’s fine,” Kallus reassures before he reaches out and takes her hands slowly. Ahsoka stares down at how he’s trying to offer comfort. She squeezes his hands, trying to reassure him. Kallus sighs and continues. “Not everyone knows who Vader was, it’s not common knowledge, just as it’s not common knowledge that he had children.”

Children? Children! As in more than one? Ahsoka grips Kallus’ fingers tightly. She manages to tell him, “Alright, you’re going to tell me about that pilot.”

“You should tell her about Kenobi first,” Chopper butts in.

“Obi-Wan?” Ahsoka guesses. He’s not alive, not anymore, but he had been. So many losses while she was gone.

“Yes, he was on Tatooine, helping to protect Luke Skywalker,” Kallus informs her.

Ahsoka sighs. Anakin had a son. She suddenly has so many more questions, but she’ll get them answered and then she’ll figure out where Ezra is.
