A/N: Written post Episode 5 and also written for the 100 fandoms challenge prompt share.
The Key:
Yelena turns the key over in her hands. This should be exciting: the key to an apartment in New York City, except she was supposed to share that with Natasha, not Kate Bishop. Fanny huffs. Yelena smiles down at her dog before scratching her behind the ears. Fanny sighs in contentment.
“I know,” Yelena tells her. “It’s good here. You’re comfortable and you have a friend. I don’t have to pay rent. I can come and go as I please.”
She tilts her head to stare at her favorite window. She’d dropped out of that space the first time she’d talked to Kate and the young woman had it turned into a sliding glass window with a bit of a ledge on the inside, easy to get in and out of. It’s her preferred method of getting in and out, but now Kate’s left her a spare key. She’s got an invitation to use the front door, which somehow feels more permanent then having her own room here, her own bed. And together she and Kate have put together an eclectic collection of cutlery and dishes. She likes her growing collection of hot sauces better. She wants to believe they’re safer stored at Kate’s apartment then traveling with her, but staring at the key she’s starting to realize that it’s their apartment, not just Kate’s.
Fanny huffs again, nudging her hands. It’s then Yelena realizes her hands have gone still in Fanny’s fur. Yelena grins at her. “Greedy.”
Then she starts scratching behind Fanny’s ears with one hand while using the other to pet her. She keeps petting as she listens to Kate’s telltale clomping steps. The lock turns. The door swings open. Lucky comes bounding in. He gives a bark of excitement, then jumps up to join Fanny in laying on Yelena.
“Hello to you too,” Yelena tells him. “Look Fanny, it’s your favorite dog friend: Lucky the Pizza Dog.”
Lucky gives another bark as if he’s agreeing. Fanny huffs and presses a paw on his head. Lucky nuzzles close and Fanny allows it. Yelena coos as the two of them start to cuddle. Together they’re a comfortable weight on top of her.
“You’re here,” Kate says.
“Yes,” Yelena agrees.
“You could’ve unlocked the door.”
“And deprive you the satisfaction of opening it?” Yelena teases, then smiles. She can practically feel Kate glowering at her.
“I made you a key.”
“Yes, Fanny and I were discussing it.”
“And what does Fanny think?”
Yelena pretends to think about her words, she hums a wordless note briefly, before tilting her head to grin at Kate. “If this is going to end up the headquarters of the Young Avengers, we’re going to need more cutlery.”
Kate snorts. “I still can’t believe the papers called us that.”
“Jameson didn’t mean it kindly, but he underestimated our will to rebrand that title.”
“Well, I have pizza. We don’t need silverware for that,” Kate reasons.
Yelena hums again, pretending to consider this.
“Should we plot our rebranding?” Kate asks.
“Right now it’s just you, me, and Stature. Perhaps we should recruit that Captain Marvel stan.”
“Ms. Marvel,” Kate informs her.
Yelena waves the correction away.
“All woman team is what you’re saying?”
“So far,” Yelena concedes. “Just to start. I want to make Jameson squirm.”
“Is there an ulterior motive or is this just for fun?”
“Are you telling me you won’t find that enjoyable?” Yelena volleys back.
Kate laughs. “You’re right.”
“I usually am. We need to work on your stealth.”
Kate rolls her eyes. “After pizza. Do you want a plate or paper towel?”
“Am I doing the dishes or are you?”
“I bought dinner,” Kate points out.
“I’m trapped under the weight of two dogs who are determined to be my blanket,” Yelena bargains.
“You wash, I’ll dry and put away?” Kate offers.
“That will work,” Yelena agrees as she closes her hand around the key. “Thank you for the key.”
Kate pauses. “You’re welcome.”
Their eyes meet and they share a smile. Yelena is sure Natasha would approve of her baby sister finding family because of Clint.
