Summary: Post Mandalorian S2. Luke would like Sabine to help teach Din how to use the Darksaber. Sabine thinks he should just ask Din out. Then she gets Rau involved.
A/N: Deanna Shan is from the Dark Horse comics Empire and Rebellion. Grogu is technically in the fic, but he's sleeping the whole time. Could be seen as Gen.
Devise:
The laughter of children drifts over to them and Luke smiles. He's only just starting with a school and most of his students are adults, but there are enough children that they're enjoying a game of hide and seek. Grogu, who's napping on his chest after happily eating the ice pop Luke intended for himself, let's out a sigh of contentment. Sabine, who's sitting next to him and didn't let cute big eyes talk her out of her ice pop, smiles down at Grogu. Deena laughs. She managed to eat half her ice pop before handing it over. Luke rubs Grogu's back and sighs as he lets his head rest back against the rough stone of the building they're borrowing shade from.
"Your attempts at convincing me that I need to be the one to train Din aren't very convincing," Sabine informs him.
Luke lets out a noise of protest, trying not to be too loud. He also gives her a confused look. He can't tell if she's teasing him or not.
"You could just invite him here. You have a lightsaber training class," she continues.
"Which you help me run," Luke points out.
"He'd get to see his kid, and you," Sabine counters.
"That's the problem though," Deena says, voice light and teasing. "Luke has daddy issues."
"Deena!" Luke complains.
She rolls her eyes. "I have daddy issues too. We have compared our daddy issues."
Sabine gives them a speculative look. "There's always Ezra."
Luke winces. He doesn't want Ezra to teach Din, though if Sabine isn't willing, they need to do what's best for both Din and Grogu. Why doesn't he want Ezra to teach Din? It would distract from Ezra looking for new students as he patrols the Outer Rim, but Luke doesn't think that's it.
"Jealous?" Sabine prods.
Luke grimaces. “I don’t want to be. Jealousy…”
Deena prods him. “You are not going to go all ‘dark side’ because of a man. You’re not controlling like that.”
Luke gives her a grateful smile. She's right. If Din and Ezra became interested in each other, he'd wish them well. He would feel some disappointment, he is aware enough of his feelings to know he finds Din attractive, but at this point his interest in Din is nothing more than attraction, a fondness for his son, and a gratefulness that Din had provided a supportive, safe environment for Grogu. Luke blows out a breath. "Ezra and I aren't always in agreement on how to teach. He got a more traditional education while being supported by a family."
He pauses to give Sabine an acknowledging smile.
"I got what feels like several crash courses, one of them in a swamp. I feel like I’ve been struggling to find descriptions on how to teach Force-sensitives in a safe way," he continues. He sighs. "Ezra and I don't always agree on how to teach and we've finally reached an equilibrium. Things are starting to run smoothly and I want them to keep running smoothly. We'd have to rearrange again if Ezra came back to teach Din."
"He's also happy finding Force-sensitives and exploring old temples," Sabine puts in.
"He's still healing from his time with Thrawn," Luke agrees. "This seems to be helping."
"He's got Chopper keeping an eye on him and…" Sabine stops to shake her head. "They are probably finding all sorts of trouble."
"Jealous?" Luke teases.
Sabine shrugs. "Not enough weapons to find to make my heart happy."
Neither of them mention Tano and Deena wouldn't know to bring her up. Grogu told him that Din and Tano already met, so maybe that’s not an avenue to try. Luke knows Tano isn't comfortable enough with him yet to help at his school. She doesn't even consider herself a Jedi, even though she and Grogu are probably the only ones left who got formal temple training. Luke would love to ask her questions and seek her guidance, but he can also accept that the sight of him reminds her of his father and that his father hurt her badly.
"Rau!" Sabine calls out, diverting all of their attention. Rau divides his time between Hera's flight school and here, making sure everyone has basic flight training.
Luke frowns at the grin on Sabine's face. She's clearly about to rope Rau into a scheme. Rau pauses near them and runs a hand through his hair. "Well, out with it. I've got a date with Rex and I don't want to be late again."
"New Mand'alor," Sabine says.
Rau goes completely still and Luke can feel the shock running through him. His eyes narrow and his hands go to his hips. "Am I going to like this or not?"
"He won the Darksaber in combat," Sabine continues. Then she points to Grogu. "This is his foundling and Luke has a crush."
Rau takes Grogu in with a soft look, then meets Luke's eyes. "New student?"
"Yes," Luke answers cautiously. Sabine is bubbling with a new plot and Rau feels calculating.
"Have you told your sister yet?" Rau asks.
"Just what do you want me to tell Leia?" Luke asks cautiously.
"I think he means about your crush," Deena ventures.
Sabine smirks.
"She'd encourage it," Rau says.
Sabine nods.
"I'm not following," Luke admits.
"The leader of the new Jedi Order, who is related to a celebrated senator of the New Republic getting romantically involved with the Mand'alor would be an easy way to get Mandalorians to join the New Republic and to get the New Republic to help the Mandalorians rebuild," Rau reasons.
"You're saying she's going to encourage a ridiculous crush because of political reasons," Luke clarifies.
"Have you met her?" Sabine says.
"She'd want me to be happy," Luke protests.
"Then it's a good thing you already have a crush on him," Deena laughs.
Luke rolls his eyes, but lets Rau's words sink in. He thinks about how many people could benefit from the scenario Rau's put together. He sighs. "You knew exactly what to say."
Rau shrugs, but doesn't deny it. "What else do we know about him?"
"He's from one of those always wear your helmet sects," Sabine tells him.
Rau considers this. "Religious reasons sect or conveniently hiding rescued clones sect?"
"No idea," Sabine answers. "Be something to find out. He did take his helmet off to say goodbye to his ad and Luke thinks he's handsome."
Luke uses the Force to shove her in the shoulder and she laughs.
"Do we know his political beliefs?" Rau asks.
Sabine shakes her head. "We only really know what his foundling can tell us."
"Another reason to invite him here," Rau says. He studies Grogu for a moment. "Maybe it's about time we had another Mandalorian Jedi."
"There was a Mandalorian Jedi?" Luke asks.
Deena shakes her head, then encourages, "Find out after Rau's date. In the meantime you, me, and Sabine can fill your sister in and figure out how to contact Din."
"I just wanted to make sure he knows how to use the Darksaber, not seduce him for political reasons," Luke protests.
"Which is why we call your sister," Deena explains. "She'll be able to help him plan and she's actually good at breaking down political things into an easy to understand explanation."
Luke nods, then sighs. So much for his break in the shade. "You're right."
"I'll let Rex know," Rau says before he gives them a wave goodbye and heads off.
"Do you really think Din will come?" Luke asks.
Sabine raises her eyebrows. "You fought through how many droids to rescue his kid? He's Mandalorian, he's already got a crush. And now you're going to seduce him with weapons training. This will work, but we'll lead with the holo I took of his kid napping on you to solidify the plan."
"The plan to make sure he knows how to use the Darksaber," Luke reminds them, though he suspects once Leia is on board with the plan he'll be engaged.
