Memories:
Kendrix sighs as she sits back in her chair and rubs at her aching neck. She glances at the time and grimaces. It’s supposed to be her day off, but she’s spent the entire day at the workstation in her room. She vaguely remembers Maya bringing her lunch. Maybe she should take the rest of the day off?
She wanders into the rangers communal living area with vague thoughts of food as she debates if she wants another cup of coffee or something with less caffeine. Maybe water, she’s not sure she’s had any water today. She stands in the doorway and watches as Kai cracks an egg and then starts separating the yolk out.
“Need me to crack an egg?” she offers.
He smiles and doesn’t bring up the last time when she got eggshells in his recipe. They’d manage to fix it, but still…
“This isn’t stress baking is it?”
“Do I look stressed?” Kai asks.
She considers him as she pulls a stool up to the counter. Kai shakes his head. Kendrix sighs, “I’m just being a hypocrite. I just spent my entire day off working.”
Kai nods, then cracks another egg. Kendrix makes herself get up and get a glass of water. She actually should try and get some sleep and coffee will keep her up. She plops back onto the stool. Kai picks up another egg, then uses his knuckle to nudge a container of flavoring at her. She picks it up and turns it so she can make sure it isn’t one with caffeine. If she’s having caffeine it’s going to be coffee.
“It’s just flavoring,” Kai reassures. “Well, maybe some sugar and electrolytes, but it isn’t that coffee replacement stuff that Leo likes.”
Kendrix gets up for a spoon and then sets about deciding how much flavoring her water needs before its drinkable.
Kai waits till she’s halfway through the glass before he teases, “You’ll never guess what happened today.”
She takes another sip of her water and considers before she guesses, “Someone used Damon as a decoy?”
Kai shakes his head. “No ranger activity today.”
“Leo tore off another shirt.”
“That’s plausible,” Kai admits slowly, cheeks flushing. “It’s like he’s allergic to shirts.”
Kendrix snorts. She almost says Mike should’ve warned them, but today is the day they all met, the day they all started training together, the day they all became friends. Kendrix taps her fingers against her glass. “Maya and animals?”
“Now you’re just being vague and that happens almost daily.”
“And so…”
“She’s become interested in chickens,” Kai warns her.
Kendrix groans. Are there about to be chickens attempting to roost on her bed? Kai snorts. Kendrix shakes her head. “This isn’t helping.”
“Thankfully she’s only wanting to help with the chickens,” Kai attempts to reassure. They both know it’s not reassuring.
“What happened?” Kendrix prods.
“One of them escaped from the farming area and there was concern it got into a different enclosure.”
“Did Maya find it?”
“Eventually, but Bulk tried to help,” Kai tells her.
Kendrix grimaces. “Did he end up with random food on him?”
“There was pie. I don’t even know how there was pie, but he was covered in pie.”
Kendrix laughs. “Leo can never keep a shirt on and Bulk ends up covered in food. Maybe it’s the universe’s way of balancing things?”
“Maybe.”
“What are you making?” she finally asks.
“Kieflies. They’re a birthday present.”
Kendrix presses her lips together and widens her eyes, giving Kai her best hopeful look.
Kai laughs. “Yes, I’m making enough that you’ll get some. I don’t think Maya’s tried keiflies yet.”
“Oh, yeah. She should. Maybe we should make a list of foods we love and try to make them for her,” Kendrix suggests.
“She’d probably really like that,” Kai agrees. “And it’ll give me an excuse to bake more.”
“Do you really need an excuse?”
Kai shakes his head. “You’ll find me one though.”
“That’s what best friends are for.”
“The reason we’re best friends,” Kai agrees.
Their eyes meet and they sigh. They both miss Mike and it feels wrong without his finishing this refrain between them. Kendrix holds up three fingers and counts them down. Together they say, “Best friends forever.”
Kai sighs. “He was such a sap.”
“Sometimes, yes,” Kendrix agrees.
“I miss him,” Kai admits as he begins to mix ingredients.
Kendrix nods. “I miss him too.”
Kai pauses. “Didn’t Mike have a run in with chickens?”
Kendrix’s eyes widen as she thinks about it. “You weren’t there, but he loved that story. Okay, so Mike and I were…”
