Just Flirting:

Jyn makes mistakes in Garel City from the start. Finding lodging and a job to help her pay for passage to the next Outer Rim world is easy enough, then finding passage to another planet proves difficult. Instead of bartering for a trip she helps a little girl rescue her tooka from the Imperials and now she’s not sure the stormtroopers won’t stop her for questioning if she tries to book passage through mass transit.

Not smart. Really she should know better, but what else was she supposed to do? Giving the girl her real name and not the one she’s currently using is, well she doesn’t have an excuse for that.

Then she finds a map and during the run from the stormtroopers she gets trapped in an alleyway. She’s about to try and vault over the container and escape when a Mandalorian woman drops down in front of her all cocky as she reveals she’d dropped the container to help Jyn escape because she’s trying to recover the map. It’s tempting to just escape, but then the Mandalorian woman is understanding, saying she used to be a loner too and Jyn is curious. She should not want to hand over the map because sympathetic big brown eyes are asking her to. Jyn wets her lips. The chances that this woman is part of a Rebel cell with the map she’s wanting and the stormtoopers in chase are high, but Jyn knows also needs a way off this world. She realizes she’s got a choice to make. She can either hand over the map and find her own way or she can risk bartering for passage of Garel. She can spend more time with this intriguing woman.

She also appreciates that the woman isn’t immediately pulling out a blaster and instead is giving her time to consider her next move. Jyn wets her lips. “Do you have plans to leave the city?”

“Got more than one ship, can make plans,” the woman promises.

“I want off Garel, not just out of the city, I want off the planet,” Jyn barters.

“You need to get anything or is everything you own in your pack?”

“I don’t need to go anywhere except off Garel.” Jyn is aware she sounds prickly, but she thought there’d actually be bartering or at least another plea about how important the map is.

“I heard you. Is it okay if I pick you up?”

“What?” Jyn glares. They’re about the same size. Why would she even be thinking about picking up Jyn? Jyn tries not to let her mind go to a naughty place, but it’s the only thing she can come up with.

The Mandalorian woman taps a repelling line on her belt. Jyn shakes her head and vaults over the container. The woman follows and they check for stormtroppers and then drop down onto the street together.

“Impressive,” the woman tells her. “I’m Sabine.”

Jyn hesitates. She’s been using Lyra Rallik, but she doesn’t want to give Sabine her mother’s name. She doesn’t want Sabine calling her her mother’s name. Sabine slants a glance at her. Jyn wets her lips. “Jyn.”

She’s got more than a few IDs. She can be Jyn Dawn or Jyn Ponta. No, she doesn’t want to think about Hadder when she’s looking at Sabine. Jyn Dawn then. She hasn’t pretended to be Jyn Dawn in a long time. Sabine gives her a sly smile as if she’s thinking about flirting. Jyn finds herself feeling bold enough to return the smile.

The ship Sabine leads her to has a shuttle on the back and Jyn squashes her first instinct, which is to steal it. She really doesn’t want to know how many weapons a Mandalorian would’ve packed into this clearly modified light freighter. And then Jyn discovers that it’s not Sabine’s ship. It’s Hera’s ship. Or Hera and her cranky droid’s ship. There are others too. They’re welcoming. They’re most definitely a Rebel cell and Jyn’s first instinct is to run.

Sabine must see she’s feeling overwhelmed because she gently takes Jyn’s hand and leads her to her room. “Help me revert the bottom bunk back into a bunk.”

Sabine doesn’t ask pointed questions, doesn’t even try and get her to talk. She just asks for Jyn’s help and indicates which parts of the table and chairs beneath her lofted bunk need to be set aside so that it can be converted back into a bunk. The Lasat, Zeb, is kind enough to pull the mattress out of storage and Hera brings her sheets, pillows, and blankets.

None of them push for the map.

Jyn knows it’s so she’ll let her guard down, she’ll accept their kindness, and then once she starts feeling obligated towards them they’ll start expecting her to contribute.

“Hey,” Sabine says, pushing her down onto the bunk. “You’re safe. We don’t have plans to leave yet, but we haven’t had time for you to tell Hera where you want to go.”

“You’re trying to get me to stick around,” Jyn says. She’d wanted to. She still wants to flirt.

“Can you blame me?” Sabine says. “I think you’re cute and clearly you know your way around fighting and I suspect a blaster.”

“Hard to feel safe without a blaster,” Jyn admits. “Though I prefer my batons.”

“So you’re saying you wouldn’t be opposed to some sparring?” Sabine pushes.

“Isn’t that just more flirting?”

“Could be flirting, could be foreplay.”

Jyn laughs. “Alright. I’m sticking around, for now, but only because you’re impressive too.”
