Enough For Now:

Zeb doesn’t want their vacation to end. Over the last several days he’s discovered how much he likes being mundanely domestic with Alex and he’s not looking forward to going back to base. He’ll survive it, he always does, except now he can’t stop thinking about what their life could be like if the war was over or at least the Imperials beaten enough that they could retire. He wants that, retirement with Alex, except Zeb knows he’s retiring to Lira San and he’s not sure Alex will be willing to go with him. Chava’s said Alex is welcome, she’s practically been pressuring him to bring Alex along anytime he stops by. Still, Zeb knows not everyone on Lira San will be welcoming to Alex. Also, Alex doesn’t even know Lira San exists. How can he ask his boyfriend to move to a planet he doesn’t know exists? There’s no easy way to do that. It’s frustrating. He’s sure Alex knows he’s got a place to hide any Lasats they find, but knowing that and being willing to live on a planet few people can know exists are two very different things.

“Hey,” Alex says gently. “It’s our last night, don’t get maudlin on me now.”

“Just not ready for it to end,” Zeb growls. There are so many things he wants to ask Alex. So many plans he wants them to be able to make. He’s just not sure how to start.

“Look at the stars with me?” Alex tempts.

Zeb smiles. Someone before them has lined up old ejection seats along one wall under the overhang. Sometimes he sees all the changes that have happened over time to Ezra’s watchtower and it makes him wonder what Ezra would think, sometimes he’s just grateful for how well the place functions. He drops down beside Alex and wraps an arm around him. They sit and watch the stars quietly for a moment, but Zeb can’t resist asking, “So, you gonna tell me about them?”

It's a thing Alex does when he knows he’s going to be planet side for a length of time: he learns about that’s world’s constellations and the myths that go behind them. Zeb listens as Alex points out different clusters of stars and how the ancient people of Lothal fit tales around them. He smiles at the enthusiasm in Alex’s tone. It eases some of his worry about their future. When Alex pauses, turns and gives him a soft smile Zeb can’t help but return it.

“I bet you could even tell me about the stars around Genosis,” Zeb finds himself saying.

“Bahryn has some interesting myths about it as well,” Alex informs him. His hand squeezes Zeb’s leg. Zeb smiles at him. They’ve come a long way from hating each other, even stranded together on Bahryn he never could’ve imagined that in a few years he would love Alex, want a future with Alex. A future he’s not even sure how to discuss.

“I wish you’d tell me what you’re worried about,” Alex prods.

Zeb sighs and looks back out at the stars. “I meant it when I said I’m not ready to go back. I’m not saying that we need to extend our vacation.”

“I’m not even sure we could,” Alex points out gently.

Zeb can’t help but run his hand up and down Alex’s arm, then pulls him in that bit closer. Alex takes in his expression for a moment and Zeb’s not sure what’s showing on his face, only that it makes Alex sit up, then swing a leg over his thighs till he’s perched in Zeb’s lap, looking down at him. Alex cups his face. Zeb wets his lips. Alex’s eyes track the movement. Their eyes meet and for a moment Zeb is overwhelmed with the concern and love he sees on Alex’s face.

“I’m going to need you to clarify then,” Alex pushes.

Zeb tilts his head and kisses Alex’s palm, then rest back, enjoying the way that shifts Alex’s weight against him. “I started thinking about how we could live if this war was over or if we could retire from it and build a life somewhere else. I just, where would you like to retire to?”

Alex blinks, then smiles slowly. “I’ve liked this too. I’d want to go wherever you are, if you’d still have me.”

It’s a reminder that they still have obligations, might have obligations for a long time. Zeb doesn’t want to even think about if one of them doesn’t survive.

“But what about…” Zeb starts to protest, but stops when Alex shakes his head.

“I’m not interested in a place I’m interested in you and I think that you have a place so if it’s possible I’d want to go with you,” Alex reassures.

Zeb closes his eyes, then sighs as he feels some of his tension leave him. He presses his forehead into the crook of Alex’s neck and Alex tightens his hold.

“Did you think I wouldn’t want to?” Alex asks.

“It’s more I can’t tell you where I want to go,” Zeb confesses.

“I’m in Intelligence. I know about having to keep secrets. I don’t need you to tell me. I don’t need to know where. I just need you to be there.”

“I love you,” Zeb manages.

“I love you too.”

Zeb grins and presses a kiss against Alex’s neck. Alex makes a pleased humming sound that makes Zeb want to do it again.

Except Alex asks, “So do you want to talk about a house or head inside and…”

Zeb answers by licking the side of Alex’s neck, then grinning when that makes Alex laugh. They can figure out details later, it enough to know that Alex wants to be with him.
