The Mechanics of Arranging a Date:

Paige doesn't mean to get involved with her sister's love life. She really doesn't! It’s just that she can’t help but notice Jessika noticing Rose. Of course, a lot of the pilots are noticing that Rose, Meorti, and Lemnos are building a X-Wing out of spare and scrounged parts. It’s impressive. Dameron even sends his droid to help. BB-8 is less intimidating than Chopper, but somehow both droids get involved. Jessika also makes herself available. On her few times through the flight deck Paige notices Jessika hauling things over, helping hold a piece as Rose connects them. Mostly though, she notices the longing that Jessika watches Rose with.

She wants to ask if Jessika is flirting when she gets Rose to take a water break, but Jessika joins them. Paige watches as the pilot sits close to Rose, how their legs occasionally brush, how Jessika actually listens to her sister talk excitedly about their plans for the X-Wing. Jessika is even offering suggestions. Jessika even nods enthusiastically when Rose mentions an idea she’s gotten from the maintenance manual. Paige watches as Rose pulls the manual up on her data padd and the two lean in close to look at the page together.

“Water,” Paige prompts.

Both women pause, blink at her, then remember why they’re on break and start drinking their water again. They devolve into going over the page again, but still remember to drink.

“Do you want me to get you for lunch?” Paige asks. “Or is lunch going to be protein bars and I’ll remind you about dinner?”

Jessika laughs, then glances over to where Chopper is arguing with Meorti about something. BB-8 is spinning in circles around them, offering occasional commentary. Lemnos is laughing, but sitting and drinking his water.

“What’s funny?” Paige asks, though she’s tempted to laugh at the scene by the half-built X-Wing.

“Meorti and Chopper are sticklers about us taking our breaks and meal times,” Jessika explains.

“If you don’t, he’ll start throwing protein bars to you and cussing,” Rose nods.

“To you?” Jessika asks. "Chopper actually throws them to you?"

Rose tilts her head.

“He must like you more than me. The last time he threw one at me it almost hit me in the head,” Jessika explains.

“I don’t ignore him when he tells me it’s time for a break,” Rose offers.

Paige rolls her eyes. “You’ve ignored me plenty of times.”

“You’re not as scary as Chopper?” Rose teases.

Jessika grins.

“So lunch,” Paige prompts.

Jessika and Rose decide on a lunch time and Paige sees her opportunity. She makes excused about having to schedule her lunch for an earlier time so that the two of them can dine without her. Jessika frowns. “I guess we could try the earlier time. I don’t thinking Lemnos would mind switching.”

Paige is scrambling to think of an excuse. She’s trying to help Jessika get alone time with her sister so why is Jessika making this difficult? Is she going to have to watch these two pine over each other for the next few days or even weeks? Paige tries not to groan.

“I don’t have to eat lunch with Paige,” Rose points out.

Jessika reaches out and squeezes Rose’s hand. “I know you two value your time together. I’d be trying to spend time with my family if they were here too, but I wanted to ask you to come over for dinner. I can make something and we could actually spend some downtime together.”

Rose blinks down at where their hands are intertwined. She glances at Paige, then back at Jessika. “Are you asking me on a date?”

Paige doesn’t know if she wants to be happy her sister is asking for the clarification she needs or groan that her sister needs to ask.

Jessika bites her lip, then asks in a rush. “Was I being too subtle? I’ve been trying to flirt all morning. I thought we were flirting. Were we not flirting?”

“I don’t think I realized we were flirting till you asked me to dinner while holding my hand,” Rose clarifies.

Jessika groans. “Karé always tells me I’m too subtle!”

“I think it’s more I’m not great at flirting,” Rose sooths. “I’d love dinner though.”

“So, you’re saying yes to a date with me?” Jessika asks excitedly, eyes lighting up with hope.

“Yes,” Rose giggles, unable to keep a smile off her face. Jessika grins back. The two of them are adorable.

Paige pats Rose’s shoulder as she gets up, then nods at Jessika. “You two could always enjoy lunch without me too.”

“I want to spend time with you,” Rose says. “More than just a break.”

“Alright,” Paige agrees. “I'll see you at lunch then.”

“Thank you,” Jessika grins. Rose repeats the sentiment. Paige smiles as she walks away. Okay, so maybe she didn’t get that involved and she’s happy her sister has a date.
