Scarcely Looking In:

Steph brings two big cinnamon rolls over to their table. Damian stares as she puts one in front of him and then one where she’s got her bag. She heads back to the counter to get her coffee. Damian lets himself inhale the aroma of cinnamon and sugar, somehow the roll manages to smell like warmth too. When Steph sets her coffee down and moves her bag so she can sit Damian tells her, “I thought you were just getting coffee. If we were getting food you could’ve used my card.”

Steph rolls her eyes, then rests her chin in her hands to grin at him. “Technically I’m the adult in this situation, so if you get asked about sweets it’s all my fault. Poor Damian, Stephanie is a bad influence.”

Damian lets himself snort. Her tone is amusing. She reaches into her bag and pulls out two cutlery sets still in the plastic. Damian feels himself relax as he thanks her and takes one. The cinnamon rolls is huge and he detests sticky fingers.

Tim drops into the seat between them. “Nothing is going right today.”

Damian stabs the side of the roll he wants and then cuts it in half. He transfers half to the napkin he laid out in front of the plate, before pushing it in front of Tim. Tim registers there’s food in front of him and starts to reach for it, but pauses when Steph shoves a bottle of hand sanitizer at him. He takes it, cleans his hands, and hands it back.

“Do you want silverware?” she asks.

Tim frowns at her. “They have silverware here?”

Steph rolls her eyes.

“Brown came with supplies. She insisted on paying,” Damian informs him.

“Oh, how much did it cost?” Tim asks as he starts to reach for his phone.

“Drake you just cleaned your hands,” Damian complains.

Steph holds out a fresh packet of cutlery. Tim, diverted from getting his phone, shakes his head. “Thanks. I hate sticky fingers, but I can use the napkin.”

Steph snorts and shoves more napkins at Tim. Damian glares at her.

Tim rolls his eyes. “I don’t want to know.”

Steph uses her hand sanitizer, before picking up her roll. “So, you had questions about undercover missions?”

“Specifically at schools,” Damian clarifies.

Steph wrinkles her nose. “Mine was at a girls boarding school: training the next generation of cultist killers. Not sure how much help that will be. Always have backup?”

“That is decidedly less helpful than I’d hope for,” Damian chides before turning towards Tim.

Tim registers that Damian is looking at him and swallows his bite of cinnamon roll. “Why do you think I’m still ‘seventeen’?”

“To avoid consequences for international incidents?” Damian volleys back.

Tim grins. “Yes, let's go with that.”

“Do you need back up?” Steph asks.

Tim shrugs.

“We’re supposed to be the same age. I have a college degree,” Steph points out.

“You and Jon are not allowed to be the same age,” Damian decides.

“It is what it is, at least I’ve got my own place,” Tim says.

“You know that’s weird, right?” Steph asks. “For a seventeen year old.”

“If I have to still be ‘seventeen’ I am having my own place,” Tim tells her.

Damian considers eating a bite of his roll or getting them back on topic. “This is not helpful advice since Brown’s was ‘have backup’ and I’m trying to convince Father I don’t need backup.”

“What’s the exact scenario?” Tim asks before checking that they’re in a discrete corner. He takes a bite of his roll.

Damian begrudgingly explains the situation that’s led to him agreeing to go to high school.

Steph sets her roll down. “A woman your mother fired for being too harsh with you while training you in an assassin’s cult is now the principal of the high school you’re attending and you don’t think you need backup?”

“Do not tell Grayson,” Damian decides. Why did he not realize the situation looked like that until Steph pointed it out? Dick is going to get overprotective and Damian knows if that happens he’s not going to be able to accomplish anything.

“Then let B help,” Tim bargains. “Have you seen him go full ‘PTA parent’ yet? It’s hilarious.”

“And you’re a teenager so it’s expected for you to act completely embarrassed by his antics,” Steph says. “Not that you need an excuse to use snark, but it’ll be great.”

“I’ll consider it,” Damian allows before taking a bite of his roll.

“Other than the principal, how is being a ‘normal’ high school student?” Steph asks.

“I have already been made fun of for my accent and my art,” Damian informs her.

“Which accent are you using?” Tim asks.

“Father encouraged me to use my own, so I did,” Damian answers. Then he takes in the looks on Tim and Steph’s faces. “It suddenly occurs to me that Father may be adequate backup.”

Tim makes a considering noise, then indicates his last bite of roll before asking Steph, “How do you want me to pay you for this?”

“You two split one, so just buy the next one?” Steph shrugs.

Tim glances at Damian. “Chocolate croissants?”

“Acceptable.”

“I’m getting you one too,” Tim informs Steph.

“That works, but make mine to go,” Steph agrees. “I'm eating this whole cinnamon roll.”

Damian takes another bite of his roll, it’s a decent after school snack. Then before Tim can take his last bite of roll Damian asks, “Why is nothing going right today?”

Tim groans dramatically. Steph laughs. Damian smirks.
