Cards:

Tommy opens his front door to find May standing there. He greets her, before informing her that Evan is on his way over. She smiles at him and nods. “I'm early. We won't take long. Promise.”

“He said it’s for Father’s day?” Tommy prompts as he steps back to let her in. “Do you want something to drink?”

“We confer for Father’s Day,” May agrees as she steps inside and looks around. “What do you have?”

“Tea, water, lemonade,” Tommy offers.

“Lemonade sounds good,” May smiles as she follows him into the kitchen. He finds her a glass and pulls the lemonade from the fridge and shows her where the sugar is, just in case it’s not sweet enough. She doesn’t add any sugar and thanks him. “This is really good.”

“Evan found a recipe he wanted to try,” Tommy comments.

“He was really excited that you had a lemon tree,” May nods.

“My aunt planted it,” Tommy tells her, hoping the conversation isn’t veering into awkward. “Are you hungry?”

Tommy’s relatively sure college students are always hungry. May shakes her head. “I’m having dinner with my mom, Bobby, and Harry after this.”

Tommy nods. Evan opens the door and greets him. Tommy greets him back, then informs him, “May and I are in the kitchen.”

There's a scamper of paws and then a screaming meow. May startles slightly. Evan, still in the next room, let's out an amused chuckle. “Hello to you too.”

Sandro, the orange cat he'd adopted last year, screams another meow at Evan. Evan laughs again. “Okay, I hear you.”

“Buck said he was loud,” May comments.

“Sandro insists on attention as soon as either of us get in the door,” Tommy agrees. He smiles as Evan steps into the kitchen Sandro draped around his neck. Tommy steps close to scratch Sandro's head and give Evan a brief kiss.

Evan smiles at him. “Do you want us to set up at the breakfast nook or in the dining room?”

Tommy shrugs, he's not sure how much space they need. “Whatever you need. Want me to figure out dinner?”

Evan makes a considering noise before greeting May and asking, “Are you hungry?”

“Dinner with the parents and Harry,” May declines.

Evan nods, then suggests, “We could reheat the lasagna.”

May's eyes widen and she shakes her head. “Going to make me regret saying I'm not hungry.”

“I'll get you some to take with you,” Tommy promises. There's plenty, also both he and Evan like sharing food.

“Thank you!” She grins.

As Tommy gets a Pyrex out to put a helping of lasagna into, May and Evan sit down at the breakfast nook. Evan pulls his card organizer out from his overnight bag: It's a spiral bound book with pouches for every month and a place to write down birthdays on each pouch. Evan has a system for sending out birthday cards. He still keeps in touch with several people from when he was traveling and trying different jobs in his early twenties.

May takes a similar card organizer from her bag. They both flip to June and pull out several cards. As he gets the leftover lasagna from the fridge Tommy wonders if May is like Evan when it comes to cards. Evan likes to peruse them whenever he sees them, finding ones that are perfect for someone or ones he likes and will figure out who to send to later. Evan snags a blue card from the middle of his pile and hands it to May. “This one made me think of Michael.”

“He’ll love the number one dad button,” May laughs. Evan nods. May hands him a card from her stack. “I was thinking this one for Bobby, it’s a bit sappy, but talks about all the lives he’s touched.”

As Tommy cuts a helping of lasagna and puts it into the container for May, Evan looks the card over. Tommy is gathering both the lasagna and the container to put back in the fridge when he notices the soft smile on Evan’s face. Evan looks back up at May. “This is perfect.”

“Okay,” May sighs. “Onto David.”

Before closing the fridge Tommy asks, “Evan, do you want something to drink?”

When he glances over Evan is scratching Sandro’s head. Evan shifts to smile at him. “Lemonade please.”

“Got it,” Tommy agrees as he gets the lemonade out, pouring a glass for both him and Evan. He makes his way over to the small table and hands Evan his glass, then sits down in the empty chair. Evan takes a drink of his lemonade, then finds a place to set the glass. May hands him a card with a shrug. Evan reads it over and shakes his head. He hands the card back, then takes one from his stack and hands it to her. May reads it over and nods. “It’s a little sentimental, but David likes that. Do you want one for your dad?”

Evan groans. Sandro makes an inquisitive noise at him. Evan reaches up to pet Sandro, even as he sighs, “I probably should. Do you have anything that says ‘thanks for trying to make Mom less awful?’ in there?”

Tommy reaches out and squeezes Evan’s free hand. It’s nice to finally date someone that understands that sometimes parents are touchy subjects and that it’s normal to not want to celebrate them. May considers her cards, shifting them, then smiles and hands one to Evan. Wait, do they really make cards like Evan asked for? Evan grins as he sees the card. It’s got the dad and baby character from the TV show Dinosaurs on it and reads ‘Happy Not-The-Mama’s Day’.

“My dad loved this show, this is perfect,” Evan comments. “Thanks May.”

“You’re welcome,” she grins before turning to Tommy. “Do you need a card?”

“No.”

May nods. Tommy’s grateful she doesn’t question him further. He doesn’t feel like skimming politely over his complicated feelings regarding his father.

“Harry and I got lucky,” May comments.

“I did too,” Evan agrees as he signs the card for Phillip and sets it aside. Tommy watches as he signs the ones they agreed on for Michael and David as May signs the one for Bobby. Evan hands the ones for Michael and David to her.

May glances at him again. “Do you want to sign my dad and David’s cards?”

“I don’t really know them,” Tommy says. He wouldn’t mind signing the cards, but he’s not sure that wouldn't be weird.

“They sent us that package,” Evan points out. “They wouldn’t think it’s weird that you signed.”

“Package?” May asks.

Evan blushes slightly and smiles. “They sent me a card that said ‘Happy First Pride’ and both me and Tommy shirts. Mine was in the bi flag colors and said ‘Both Both Both Is Good’ and Tommy’s said ‘Sounds Gay, I’m In’.”

May snorts. “I bet they had fun picking those out.”

“It was really kind of them,” Tommy says. He’s still touched that they included him in spoiling Evan for his first Pride.

“They really won’t think it’s weird,” May comments as she holds out the cards. Tommy nods and takes them. He signs his name to each and hands her the cards back. She holds out Bobby’s card. “Bobby too?”

Tommy hesitates. He wants to. Bobby is kind and he only really got a brief taste of the way working for Bobby made a difference before asking about transferring, but Bobby had been supportive about him going to Harbor. And now that he’s dating Evan and getting to interact with Bobby again, the man has been nothing but kind in a way that Tommy longed for while growing up. “Really?”

Tommy isn’t sure how to feel about how hopeful his voice sounds.

May’s face softens. “Yes. Don’t feel weird about it. He kind of thrives off of having ‘dad moments’ with people he cares about. After Buck signs it he’ll circulate it around the firehouse and then give it to my mom. She’ll sneak it to Harry and he’ll hold onto it until Father’s day.”

“Thanks for including me,” Tommy says as he takes the card and opens it, trying to decide what to write. He settles on thanking Bobby for everything and then signing his name. He hands the card to Evan, who considers it as he holds his pen aloft. Tommy smiles as Evan bites his lower lip and then writes a short message for Bobby before signing, putting the card in the envelope and then setting it aside.

As May and Evan gather up their cards to put back into their organizers Tommy asks May if she wants anything more to drink. She checks the time and shakes her head. “I have to get going. Thanks though.”

Tommy nods before getting up to get her the lasagna he set aside for her.

“You didn’t have to give me one of your nice containers,” May comments.

“It’s the only kind he has,” Evan informs her.

May nods. “Bobby switched us over to only the nice ones when he moved in.”

“You can actually reheat it in the dish instead of having to get a plate,” Tommy puts in.

“That was exactly his point,” May grins as she takes the dish. “Thank you.”

They take a moment to say their goodbyes as they move towards the door. May takes one last moment to pet Sandro before waving and heading out. Evan smiles at him as he shuts the door, then says, “Thanks for giving us the space to get organized. I know Father’s day isn’t your favorite.”

“It’s not, but we both know what that’s like. I’m glad you can celebrate it now,” Tommy tells him.

Evan steps close and cups his face. “You’re okay?”

“Feeling a little sentimental that I got included,” Tommy tells him truthfully. “I really appreciate it.”

Evan smiles at him before leaning in to kiss him. Tommy meets him halfway. Sandro makes a protesting noise and Evan shifts back. He scratches Sandro’s head and takes him off his shoulders. “Sorry Sandro. Down you go.”

Sandro huffs as he’s settled on the floor, then wanders off.

Evan waggles his eyebrows at Tommy. “Now, where were we?”

Tommy laughs before hauling him in for a more thorough kiss.
