So seeing a specialist for my grandma meant he scheduled surgery as soon as possible, so my father and I spent the week running around with her getting all the things that needed done beforehand finished. She had surgery today and thankfully came out of it well.
She fractured her L4, it is one of the bones in your lower back. Unfortunately it deteriated quickly and was pressing on her sciatic nerve (we suspected as much based off the pain going down her right leg and her increasing difficulty with movement. There was some swelling and he treated her with corisone. Hopefully once the swelling goes down she'll start to feel better but while he believes her bone is now stablized he believes there will be permenant damage and that she'll continue to have pain, but regain a lot of her movement. While this is probably the best possible outcome we could've had at this point considering her age and her other health conditions it makes me upset that we had this severe a problem and had to wait three weeks to be see the specialist.
She should be home tomorrow. I took the day off work, my father is going to leave work early on Wed so I can make it to class and at this point I'm calling and asking to use a PTO day on Thurs. My work has been really good about getting me the time off I've needed to help take care of her this week so hopefully that'll continue.
