Part 1:
Zack folded his arms on the table and laid his chin on top of them as he regarded his cell phone. Sitting this way he wasn’t able to see the new color adorning his clothes, he wasn’t reminded of the responsibilities that came with that new color. He also wasn’t constantly remembering that he had his ranger family to contact and make confessions to. While a part of him did want to call Jason and brag about his new color and subtly ask how, his brother by everything, but blood, had dealt with being red, there was another part of him that dreaded calling Rocky. How did he explain to Rocky that he was going to be the one leading Justin?
Of course he and Justin were the only former Power Rangers on their team and Zack wasn’t hesitant to admit that he was glad to have Justin as a blue. It was comforting to know that he could rely on Justin’s intelligence to help them out of the pitfalls they were sure to fall into.
It was also comforting to know that Justin was familiar with the routine of being a ranger, unlike Fran who’d panicked the first time she morphed. Fran was trying so hard, but she needed more confidence. He was going to have to fix that, Zack decided.
Zack smiled and shook his head at his stalling. His gaze once again settled on his cell phone. He had to make a decision. He had to confess to being red. He had to face the inevitable ritual overprotective slaughtering that was going to occur when he revealed that he was the one sending Justin into battle.
They were family, their time fighting to save the world had drawn them together. He might not know all the former rangers, but the ones he did were as close to him as the family he’d been born into. It was the family the power had made for him. Yet, despite Justin’s now adult age, Justin was still seen as the defacto child that needed protecting by many of his former teammates. Zack had never seen Justin that way.
That might be because you didn’t meet the guy until he had graduated from college and only because Trini dragged you to the graduation party that Tommy was throwing him, Zack reminded himself. Oh man, what if Trini wanted to kill him? Trini was wonderful, but Zack was sure that her overprotective streak was going to kick in when he mentioned Justin fighting.
“Enough,” Zack told himself as he picked up his cell phone and scrolled through his contacts. Unable to just avoid longer by calling Jason and not ready to face Rocky, Zack decided to call Tommy. He managed to get through the first several moments of catching up without Tommy calling him on the tension in his voice. Zack wasn’t exactly sure how Tommy had caught on, but he paused when Tommy called him on it.
“I actually called with a question,” Zack admitted, “but I’m not sure that if I ask, you won’t kill me.”
“Why would I want to kill you?” Tommy asked.
Zack frowned as he heard Tommy protesting, the phone fumble, and then Hayley’s asked, “What color and who?”
“I’m red,” Zack managed, “It just sorta happened yesterday.”
“That doesn’t answer my second question,” Hayley pointed out.
“Two of them are associated with the Jungle Fury rangers,” Zack started slowly, “Luan is yellow, he said his brother was blue. Fran is green and she said she helped the rangers, but it’s going to be difficult to convince her she’s ranger material. Luan hasn’t said the same things, but I’m not sure how to convince either of them they wouldn’t have been chosen if they shouldn’t be rangers.”
“You’ll work on that,” Hayley reassured, before she pointed out, “There should be a blue and at least one or two others.”
“Clare is silver,” Zack said, “She worked with the Mystic Force rangers. She’s…”
“Zack,” Hayley cut him off, “What are you avoiding?”
Zack sat back in his chair, took a slow breath and admitted, “Justin’s blue and everyone’s going to kill me.”
“Not if I can help it,” Hayley told him firmly.
“At least I have someone on my side,” Zack smiled, then frowned when he heard Tommy protesting to have the phone back.
“Hang on,” Hayley told him. He only heard voices, but couldn’t make out the words, except Tommy sounded stressed.
“Is he okay?” Tommy asked suddenly.
Zack rolled his eyes, “He’s dealing better than anyone else on the team. Tommy, he knows what he’s doing.”
“Right,” Tommy agreed, “Oh man, it’s just going to be hard trying to convince everyone else of that.”
“Kinda why I called you first.”
“Cause you knew Hayley would be a voice a reason?”
“Pretty much,” Zack laughed.
“We need a plan,” Tommy told him.
There was a jumble and then Hayley told him, “Here’s the plan. Tommy’s going to call Kat and get her on board if I have to spoon feed him what to say.”
Zack smiled at the protest from Tommy.
“Kat will call Tanya, while Tommy and I take care of Adam. Once everyone else is good we let Adam take care of Rocky.”
There was another protest from Tommy.
“I haven’t figured out his other team yet,” Hayley said, “They aren’t even on earth right now so we’ll figure them out after we get Rocky calmed down.”
Zack started to make a quip about Rocky’s blood pressure when his morpher beeped at him. He frowned at it, missing the communicator tone he’d been used to.
“Hang on,” he told Hayley before he pressed a button, “Zack here.”
“Trouble,” Justin told him.
“Where?” Zack asked.
“Park,” Justin answered, “I’m rounding up the others if you want to teleport with us.”
“On my way,” Zack told him, before he grabbed his phone, “Look, Hayley I…”
“Why do you think I didn’t assign you to break the news to anyone? Go, save the world. Tommy and I will make sure no one is trying to hurt you after.”
Zack laughed. He had the best family.
