There’s a jukebox. Ellie knows Yukio wants to go to the school dance, but she’s only really convinced when she realizes that there’s a jukebox. Every student gets tokens for it. The dance won’t last that long, but it’s still a nice thought.
It also gives Ellie a plan. It helps that everyone likes Yukio. It also helps that Yukio’s favorite music runs towards the more popular than Ellie’s. Wheedling only gets her so far, but Yukio’s friends help.
Yukio’s happiness when her favorite song opens the dance and then all of her favorite songs follow makes it worth it.
