The Interdimensional Passenger:

Sana watches her fare settle into the copilot’s seat. It takes Zari a moment to figure out how to strap herself in and then she’s talking into her comm. It’s an odd comm. It doesn’t project a holo and looks more like a datapad, but it’s smaller.

“One perfect day, that was all I asked for. One perfect day,” Zari tells her brother. “No. I don’t need you to send the jump ship. I found passage…Yes, I have enough credits to pay.”

Zari pauses to pinch the bridge of her nose as Sana gets the clearance to take off. Zari sighs like her brother is trying her patience. “I have half on me. Gideon will clearly have the other half when we get to the meeting point…I thought you were taking the jump ship to rescue Rory?”

As Sana brings them out of the atmosphere Zari pauses. “No, I’m not upset with Rory. He did what he had to do and subtilty is clearly not his strong suit…How is Ava handling things?”

Sana glances over as she starts to set her navicomputer. “Does that thing work in hyperspace?”

Zari pauses. Their eyes meet and Zari smiles faintly. “My brother has developed a crush on someone named Ezra…What is that Behrad? No, every time you mention him it’s with your ‘I have a crush voice’ so you tell me what that means…so it’s a mutual crush, that doesn’t mean we’re staying here or that he’d want to leave…I’m not having this argument with you. We are about to go into hyperspace so I will see you when you get back from rescuing Rory.”

Zari turns her comm off and then turns to smile at Sana. Sana frowns. Zari arches an eyebrow.

“Problem?” Sana asks. She wants to know why one of Zari’s crew needs rescuing and who they need rescuing from before she commits herself to hyperspace. She’d had fun flirting with Zari in the bar. She’d enjoyed kissing Zari, but this has turned into a fare instead of a night of fun and Sana is beginning to think she should’ve asked more questions. She’s on leave from the Rebellion, but she’s sure Echo Base could use the supplies she’s recently acquired.

Zari shrugs her shoulder. “Behrad is…”

“I’m not interested in your brother or his crush. Who’s Rory and why do they have to rescue him?”

“If I said Heat Wave it wouldn’t mean anything to you, would it?” Zari says. She’s clearly stalling.

“No,” Sana glares.

“I just wanted a spa day away from everyone and a one-night stand,” Zari laminates, then sighs. “Rory…how do I explain this?”

“Where are you from?” Sana asks. It feels like Zari is avoiding her question.

“Earth, where are you from?”

She’s never heard of Earth. Maybe it’s a planet in the Unknown Regions? They are going to the edge of the Outer Rim. “Nar Shaddaa.”

Zari doesn’t react. There isn’t even any polite indifference or dismay. Zari’s never head of Nar Shaddaa. Sana feels her shoulders relax. Zari raise her eyebrow again.

“Your friend…” Sana starts.

“He’s not my friend,” Zari interjects. “Though I did enjoy some of his books.”

Sana raises her eyebrow. Zari leans in, then apologizes for interrupting. Sana sighs through her nose. “Is he in trouble with the Imperials?”

Zari wrinkles her nose. “They really call themselves Imperials? Of course they do. Gideon didn’t really have a lot of information when we got here. I’m not telling Nate he was right about how I shouldn’t run off to the first spa I could find before we got more information, but I really needed time away from all of everything. Please tell me there is at least some Resistance against these Imperials?”

Sana blinks. She doesn’t understand everything Zari just said. “There’s a Rebellion.”

“Perfect. Are you a part of it?”

Sana isn’t sure if Zari’s words relax her because that means she’s not an Imperial and this isn’t some convoluted trap or if Zari’s words concern her because she’s just saying these things so freely. “Talking like that can get you killed Princess.”

Great, now she sounds like Han. Sana wrinkles her nose.

“Don’t call me that.”

“Noted,” Sana agrees.

“So, are you?” Zari asks as she motions with her hands, urging Sana for an answer.

Normally Sana would say she’s a smuggler, that she’s only in this for the money, but she hasn’t been lately. She’s gotten sucked into the Rebellion. She keeps sticking her neck out for them, apologizing for her ex-girlfriend’s antics, and worst of all she’s made friends. This is somehow all Han’s fault, she’s sure of that.

“Did you still want a one-night stand?” Sana deflects as she sends them into hyperspace.

“You’re piloting and that didn’t answer my question.”

“We’re going to be in hyperspace for hours,” Sana points out. “There’s an alarm if I’m needed for anything.”

“Oh.” Zari considers this, then looks at her expectantly.

The temptation to kiss that look of Zari’s face and drag her to Sana’s bed is almost irresistible, but Sana isn’t sure that’d work. “You could be a spy.”

Zari smiles and seems to understand that’s all the answer that Sana feels comfortable giving. She reaches out and squeezes Sana’s hand. “I’m glad you’re here with me, otherwise I might have ended up trying to get to the Legends in who knows what kind of ship. Let me figure out where I can pray and then I’ll let you seduce me.”

“There’s an extra bunk room,” Sana offers. “How much space do you need?”

Zari reaches into her purse and pulls out a device that looks like a comm unit. “I just need a direction. Behrad got Gideon to make these. It’s kinda of like an intergalactic, interdimensional compass.”

She looks at her device briefly, then shows the display to Sana. It looks like a compass. Zari grins before putting the device in her bag, then she fluffs her hair before kissing Sana.
