Ballast:
Ahim settles with tea because she knows Luka will join her and eventually they’ll cuddle. She closes her eyes and lets herself feel Luka’s steady weight against her.
She’s far from home, far from the life she was raised for, but her home is destroyed and her people are scattered. She’s trying to be visible, resisting. She’s trying to give them hope. Today the losses choke her. It’s easier to breathe through with Luka here. She cards fingers through Luka’s hair, tipping her head back. Luka gives her a soft smile. Ahim kisses her forehead, then tells Luka her troubles.
