After All This Time:
There’s a child wandering slowly down the street. There’s an orange and white astromech trailing him. Omega thinks that the astromech looks familiar, but she’s not sure. The child has short green hair and semi pointed ear. Sephi maybe? She can’t see what’s caught the child’s attention, but she keeps part of her attention on him as she finishes picking up the supplies she’s purchasing.
It’s been a habit of hers for years: watch out for any wandering unaccompanied by an adult children. She used to be that easily distracted wandering child and it makes her feel protective.
She should know this astromech. She’s paying more attention to the child. She checks in with Tech. He asks her to describe the astromech. “Could be one of the astromechs Echo and I upgrade weapons systems for.”
Before she can answer the two stop at an alleyway.
“We need to go this way,” the kid says.
The astromech whirls reminding him that they’ve already gone farther away from the ship than they should’ve.
“But what we need is down this way,” the kid protests.
“What is it you’re looking for?” Omega steps in.
The kid looks up at her and grimaces. The astromech puts himself between them.
Omega doesn’t move closer. Instead she asks the droid, “Where are you two supposed to be?”
She isn’t sure what to do with the profanity as a response. The kid laughs, then looks down the alleyway. Then the kid looks at her again and frowns. “You look like my uncle.”
She’s very tempted to say she looks like a lot of people’s uncle, but she’s not sure clone humor wouldn’t go over his head and that’s not likely what he means.
“Jacen!”
Omega wants to turn at the sound of that voice, it’s a lovely voice.
The kid sighs. The astromech signals to the person calling out and when Omega turns and sees who’s striding towards them she goes absolutely still. She doesn’t remember Hera Syndulla sounding like that. Of course the last time they spent any length of time together they were children. The two of them worked in the same Rebellion. They were in different cells for awhile and then just kept kinda missing each other. She knew what Hera looked like, had seen a picture and thought she was pretty, but the woman striding towards her is gorgeous. Omega tells herself to stop, Hera is clearly a worried mother looking for her kid and this means the astromech is Chop or is it Chopper? Omega can’t remember. It’s on the tip of her tongue to call Hera General. Hera slows, then smiles widely. “Omega?”
“Yes.”
“What is my son getting into?”
“I’m not sure. I was just asking.”
They both turn to look at Jacen. He huffs and points down the alleyway. “I need to go down there. It’s important. It’s…”
He trails off to give her a worried look, then looks at Hera. She gives him a skeptical look.
“What we need is this way,” Jacen insists. He looks like he wants to say something more, but he glances at her again.
“Stick close,” Hera instructs him, but Omega decides she’s going to follow that order too. She wants to stick close to Hera. They all start down the alleyway. Hera smiles at her. “I really thought I’d see you guys at Echo base.”
Omega shrugs. “We helped find the place, well Echo found the place, and we helped with some of the initial building and planning. We helped after the evacuation, but I never saw you.”
They’d lost so many after the evacuation of Echo base.
“We’d been called to help elsewhere before the Imperials discovered the base,” Hera tells her.
Part of Hera’s team had been at Endor, Omega’s hadn’t. Her team had helped take Coruscant, Hera’s team had been busy elsewhere.
“I thought about trying to get a hold of you, but we really only met once and then kept missing each other,” Hera confesses.
“We’re both here now,” Omega points out. Their eyes meet and they smile at one another.
“This, here,” Jacen says, pointing at a door. Chopper moves to open it, saying he’s already scanned it. It opens easily. It’s a dusty warehouse full of shelves and displays. Jacen looks around and then starts down one aisle. They follow, their conversation fading as they get close to Jacen’s find. Then they’re standing in front of a block of carbonite with a man…a male clone inside.
“Do not unfreeze him,” Hera instructs.
“But he needs help,” Jacen insists.
“There’s a process to getting him out of here safely, then woken up safely in a way that won’t traumatize him,” Omega encourages.
“You mean you have to get his chip out,” Jacen challenges.
Chopper laughs.
“That too,” Omega agrees.
Hera reaches out and squeezes her hand. “Stick around, let’s figure this one out together and quit missing each other.
Omega nods, mouth suddenly dry. She agrees and tangles her fingers with Hera’s.
