This Could Mean Everything:
Obi-Wan barely manages to hide Luke in a nearby air vent when one of the boarding pirates enters the room and points a blaster at him. They both pause, staring at each other. She’s young. A Tholothian. Her eyes are wide with recognition. Her gaze flicks past him towards the air vent and then back to him.
“I know you.” Obi-Wan can’t keep the words in. He wants to say he should remember her name, but the exhaustion from the last few days leaves him fumbling for it.
“You must be mistaken, Master Ke…” She breaks off and takes a slow breath. “You’re mistaken.”
“What’s wrong?” An almost familiar, yet completely unfamiliar, male voice demands.
And then there’s a clone standing there. Obi-Wan doesn’t think, only reacts. He puts Katooni behind him. Katooni. Her name is Katooni.
The clone levels his blaster. “Let her go.”
“Don’t hurt him!” Katooni demands and distractedly Obi-Wan realizes she’s talking to both of them. Her hand squeezes his as she peeks out from behind him. “Don’t hurt each other.”
“He grabbed you,” the clone points out.
Obi-Wan wets his lips. He’d trusted the clones he’d worked with too. He’d trusted Cody.
“Hob, he’s trying to protect me,” Katooni says in a soothing voice. “Master Kenobi, can you…”
“Ben,” he corrects. He shouldn’t give her his new name, not with Hob standing here, but he’s still trying to figure out how to safely get both Katooni and Luke off this ship that’s being boarded. “I thought it was pirates.”
“This is pirates. We’re pirates now,” Katooni confirms. “Can you see the bandage on Hob’s head?”
“You’re a pirate now?” Obi-Wan asks incredulously.
She squeezes his hand.
“Yes, I can see the bandage,” Obi-Wan answers her.
“Hob was knocked out when the order went out to activate the chips,” Katooni explains. “He’s since had the chipped removed. He’s not going to try and kill you.”
“No,” Obi-Wan manages. “That’s not…what?”
“I might kill you if you hurt her,” Hob puts in.
“That’s not helping,” Katooni sighs.
“What is taking so long?” A familiar voice demands right before Hondo Ohnaka peaks in. He grins. “My nemesis! You’re alive!”
“I thought I was your friend,” Obi-Wan manages dryly.
Hondo shoves at Hob. Hob glances at him, raises an eyebrow, but doesn’t budge.
“He is a sometimes nemesis and sometimes friend so you can move,” Hondo insists.
“He’s got Katooni,” Hob points out flatly.
Hondo makes a noise of understanding. “I suggest you give me my daughter back.”
“Daughter?” Obi-Wan tries to clarify.
“Clearly. She has my tenacity. Can’t you see the resemblance?” Hondo clarifies.
This is how Katooni is keeping herself safe and if Hondo hasn’t turned her in for a reward, maybe this means he’s safe from Hondo turning him? What happens to Luke if Hondo turns him in?
“This is a passenger ship!” Katooni accuses.
“It is?” Hondo laughs.
She steps out from behind him and her hands are on her hips. “It is.”
“A surprise,” Hondo placates, “but one I still need to make profitable!”
His eyes stray from Katooni to him and Obi-Wan worries this means he will be turned in for a reward. What happens to Luke? How does he get Luke to Tatooine if he’s captured and handed over to the new Empire?
“I would like a moment with my friend,” Hondo informs Katooni and Hob.
“You mean your nemesis,” Hob interjects.
“Sometimes that, yes,” Hondo agrees.
Their eyes meet and for a moment Obi-Wan is struck by the concern he sees staring at him. Katooni steps around Hondo and grabs Hob’s arm. They step away. The door slides shut.
“Alone at last,” Hondo smirks. “It looks like it’s just you and me.”
Luke burbles.
Hondo’s eyes stray to the air vent. “Or perhaps not.”
“What are you doing?” Obi-Wan manages to ask.
“Do you mean what am I going to do?” Hondo corrects.
Luke makes a high noise.
“Should I see what you’re protecting or will you show me?” Hondo asks.
Obi-Wan wishes he was wearing one of his robes and could hide his hands. Instead he grips the side of his pants, not sure what to say. Oddly enough he doesn’t sense any danger from Hondo and that makes his decision for him. He goes to the air vent and brings Luke down into his arms.
Hondo smiles and gives Luke one of his fingers to grip. He studies Luke with a fond look on his face before he looks at Obi-Wan. “Just one?”
“Yes,” Obi-Wan lies.
“Where are you going?”
Obi-Wan looks down at Luke. “His safety is my main concern.”
Hondo studies him quietly a moment. “Katooni’s safety is now my concern.”
“Thank you,” Obi-Wan manages. “Though I don’t understand why you’re helping.”
Hondo huffs, then watches Luke. “Do you think this new Empire will stop with the Jedi?”
“No,” Obi-Wan frowns, his grip on Luke tightening. Luke’s attention goes from Hondo to him. He gives the baby a reassuring smile. He takes a deep breath to remain calm. “I can’t tell you where I’m taking him.”
“Then you’ll let me provide you with a ship so you’ll not be observed taking him there,” Hondo insists.
“I don’t believe there’s any profit in that for you,” Obi-Wan points out hesitantly.
“The Empire not winning is profit enough.”
Obi-Wan wets his lips. He wants to trust this offer. The less people who witness him going to Tatooine the safer it will be for Luke. “Katooni?”
Hondo smiles down at Luke again. “Stay with us a few days. Rest. Then ask her what she wants to do.”
Obi-Wan closes his eyes. A rest sounds exactly like what he needs. He looks down at Luke and worries about his safety. Katooni is trusting Hondo. And if he stays he can find out more about Hondo's plans for Katooni, about Hob, more about the chips.
“For a few days,” he agrees.
“Excellent,” Hondo grins.
