Yearn:

Even with all of her and her daughter’s adventures in Barbieland Grace never imagines it’ll end with Barbie choosing to come home with them. It’s been safe to have a one-sided unrequited crush on the living embodiment of the doll she used to project all of her insecurities and worries on because after they save Barbieland she’ll never see Barbie again. And then Barbie asks if she can stay with them and her daughter looks so hopeful and part of Gloria isn’t ready to let go of her crush so she agrees, inviting Barbie to take the spare bedroom in the house she shares with her nice, safe, and stable husband.

Thankfully Mattel already has procedures for how to integrate a former doll from Barbieland into their world. They seem a bit nervous, having mostly only worked with Alans before, but they rally quickly. Barbie gets set up with an identity and a job. They even offer her housing, but before Gloria can even make sure Barbie knows she’s still welcome, no pressure, Sasha jumps in. “She’s staying with us.”

Sasha crosses her arms and glares, that look that dares anyone to contradict her. Barbie’s shoulders visibly relax. That settled Gloria starts to worry about what she’s going to tell her husband without seeming delusional. Turns out there are procedures for family members as well. Her husband stops by after work and gets updated. They all have to sign NDAs. Gloria feels herself relax when she finds out she’s getting a week of paid time off to help Barbie settle in.

And then they’re home and showing Barbie the spare room. Gloria expects disappointment. The spare room, the rest of their home, is not exactly a dream house. It’s cozy and lived in and she’s proud of it, but it’s still very different from what Barbie is used to. Instead Barbie is curious about everything and Sasha is enthusiastic about what they can show her. Gloria isn’t sure she’s seen Sasha this excited since she was a kid. It’s exactly what she needs to see to decide inviting Barbie to live with them is the right decision.

She still takes her husband aside. “I’m sorry I didn’t consult you first.”

They have a strict they must have a discussion with each other before making big decisions agreement.

He shrugs, then asks, “Do you love her?”

“I barely know her,” Gloria hisses, trying to keep her voice low. Sasha and Barbie are in the fridge while Sasha explains how drinking works. Gloria is pretty sure they’re onto a taste test of every drink in the fridge. Gloria glances past her husband. No, the two of them are making Kool-Aid. Judging by the color it’s the one Gloria likes to mix with…wait has Barbie ever had alcohol? Has she ever been drunk?

“Well, she’s clearly enamored with you.”

Gloria’s attention snaps back to her husband. “What are you saying?”

He huffs, then sighs before saying, “I love Sasha. We both do, but we’ve already has the' we got together to give her a stable environment to grow up in, not because we both wanted a life together' discussion.”

Gloria sits down across from him and gives him her full attention. They’ve talked about how they got married because it was the safe option, one their families wouldn’t berate them for after Gloria got pregnant. “I thought we were staying together until Sasha was at college.”

“Or unless one of us found someone to move on with,” he reminds her.

“Have you found someone?”

He takes her hands. “No, but if I’m understanding what happened correctly you were so miserable that you somehow projected it onto that women in there who used to be a Barbie doll living in Barbieland.”

“She came and found me and then we had to go back and save her world,” Gloria agrees. It’s sounds fantastical.

“If you didn’t have Sasha with you, if she didn’t need to come back and Barbie had asked you to stay, would you?”

“Yes,” she answers automatically, then shakes her head. “No. I have a life and family here.”

“Gloria,” he sighs. “Staying together was about what was best for us financially and best for Sasha in the long run, but she’s been miserable and you’ve been miserable and I’ve just kinda been here going through the motions.”

“You’re miserable too,” Gloria concludes. “I don’t want a divorce because you think I’m going to move on with Barbie. She’s probably not even interested in me or if she is she’s got the same level of interest she did in Ken.”

Is she treating her husband the way Barbie treated Ken? No, she includes him. She tries. She’s not in love with him though. They’ve felt more like cordial roommates for years.

“It wouldn’t be a divorce because you’re moving on. It’s be a divorce because we both want to find what would make us happy in life,” he says. “Let me look at the financials again?”

“Okay,” she agrees. “Look into how much therapy is going to cost for Sasha. I don’t want her dealing with this on her own.”

“That was part of the agreement with Mattel,” he points out.

“What?”

“We have to go to therapy because moving Barbie in will be a big adjustment,” he says.

“That was in the contract we signed?” she sits back. She knew she should’ve read it closer. She’s just been a little overwhelmed.

“This is one of the reasons you married me. I pay attention to those things,” he says.

“Doesn’t hurt that you’re a lawyer either.”

He agrees. “But I think we’re both done with trying to live our lives as safely as possible, let's just make this as amicale a separation as possible.”

And that’s what they do. Sasha seems almost relieved when they tell her about the divorce. They’re already looking at houses nearby where her husband can live. They don’t want Sasha to have to move, just set up another bedroom. They don’t want to take the chance that she’d have to change schools. Thankfully the house is paid off, Gloria will only have to worry about property tax.

Having to explain taxes to Barbie is not fun exactly, but she’s good with numbers.

“I was never one of those ‘Math is hard’ Barbies,” she reassures them.

Barbie starts looking at colleges nearby since she’s not sure she wants to work at Mattel for her whole life, though she does say she enjoys carpooling and having lunch with Gloria every day. Then Barbie discovers gardening and Gloria’s fruit trees get the company of raised beds and vegetables. Gloria is eager for them to grow so they can try cooking with them. Maybe it’ll save on food costs? He ex-husband agrees it’ll save on food costs and plants some fruit in his new backyard. They’re going to have to end up sharing fruit or exchanging at some point.

As thrilled as Barbie is to learn about cooking, gardening, and the many different subjects the nearby library has books on, she’s less thrilled about the whole having a period thing. Gloria has her call off work and offers to stay home the first time Barbie has one.

Barbie squeezes her hand. “I think I’m going to get bored laying around with a heating pack.”

“You’re not going to lay around,” Gloria laughs, squeezing back. “You’’ll find a show you haven’t watched yet or finish one of the books you’re reading.”

“Maybe I should try and go to work?”

“It’s your very first period and if they’re telling you to take the day off I’d take it,” Gloria tells her firmly.

Barbie huffs. “This is one of the not fun things about being human and having human parts.”

“I’m very sorry you coming to this world meant somehow magically getting human parts where you didn’t have any,” Gloria tries.

Barbie laughs. “I’m just glad that it got explained that babies don’t leave your body by removing your...yeah now that I know how it actually works I can see why people said that was a bit scary. Though the way babies are actually born seems like a lot.”

“It can be,” Gloria agrees.

“I’ll be fine, go to work.”

“Do you want me to say home?”

Barbie shakes her head. “I’ll text you and you let me know if I’m bothering you too much.”

“You let me know if you need me to come home. I don’t want you to go through something that is freaking you out by yourself,” Gloria reminds.

“Like my first shower? That was a disaster.”

Gloria shakes her head. “You figured it out.”

“I figured out I like baths better,” Barbie grumbles.

Gloria can’t help it she leans in and places a kiss against Barbie’s forehead. Barbie blinks at her. Gloria starts to apologize.

“Do that again?” Barbie asks.

Gloria does, it’s soft and firm.

“Would it be that nice against my lips?” Barbie wonders.

Everything in Gloira stills. “You want me to kiss you, on the lips?”

“I’ve been thinking about it,” Barbie admits. “Wondering what it’s like. And then I start to think that maybe you wouldn’t want to. I didn’t really want to all the time with Ken. Sometimes it was nice, but he always seemed to be expecting more and I don’t want to do the same to you.”

“I don’t want to do the same to you either,” Gloria agrees, then admits. “I’ve been thinking about what it’d be like to kiss you too.”

Barbie takes her hands and squeezes. “Is that one of the things we can just do or do I have to ask you on a date first?”

“Date?” Gloria questions almost involuntarily. “You want to go on a date with me?”

Barbie nods. “I think I’d like to, if it was with you.”

“I’d like to go on a date with you too,” Gloria breathes.

“So we can trying kissing after we go on a date?” Barbie attempts to clarify.

“We can try kissing any time you want to,” Gloria informs her. “But I’d also like us to plan a date.”

“Now?” Barbie asks. “Could we try kissing before you have to go to work.”

Gloria glances at the time. She can still hear Sasha in the kitchen, putting her lunch together. She looks back at Barbie and nods. Barbie grins. Gloria can’t help but smile back. They lean in slowly, hands still squeezing each others. Their lips brush. Barbie sighs and Gloria kisses her more firmly. They share a few closed mouthed kisses before Barbie tries kissing into her mouth. Gloria opens for her and Barbie pulls back.

“I’m really not sure what I’m supposed to do,” Barbie whispers, a note of embarassed horror in her voice. “I know I’m supposed to put my tongue in your mouth, but what am I suppose to do with it?”

Gloria can’t help but giggle. Barbie laughs too. Their hands are still intertwined.

“How about I put my tongue in your mouth and we go from there?” Gloria offers.

Barbie nods.

Gloria leans in. Barbie meets her halfway. Gloria kisses Barbie slowly, softly, then deeply. She starts to pull back, so she can ask Barbie if this is what she wants or if she wants to try it the other way, when Barbie presses close and sucks on her tongue. Gloria groans and kisses her again. One of Barbie’s hands lets go of hers and tangles in her hair, fingers scratching lightly at her scalp. Gloria uses her free hand to cup Barbie’s cheek, angle her face just so as they continue to kiss.

They’re so lost in each other it takes her a moment to realize Sasha is standing there with her phone.

“Did you take a picture of us kissing?” Gloria asks. She squeezes Barbie’s hand, letting her free hand drop into her lap. Barbie takes her free hand and squeezes.

“You two have been pining at each other for weeks,” Sasha says, voice almost giddy. “I took a few pictures and I’ll send you the best one, then delete the rest. Does this mean you’re dating? Please tell me this means your dating.”

“Your mother has agreed to a date,” Barbie says.

“Finally!” Sasha grins.

Gloria laughs.
