Connections:
Parker keeps lists in her phone, mostly small details about Eliot and Alec. Alec will update his list with his new favorite very specific coffee order for her. Eliot would maybe worry about the security of it, if any of the information could potentially be used against them, but Parker is purposely vague. Still it's enough to remind her to pick up donuts on her way back with their coffee orders. She frowns down at the note he’s left next to donuts about getting apple cider one for Breanna. She’s sure that’s an old note and they ordered some from a bakery that’s near Nana’s house. Parker tries to quell down the sudden panic about seeing Breanna again.
“You okay?” Emma asks.
Belatedly Parker realizes her order is ready. She tries a reassuring smile but it doesn’t quite feel right on her face. She thanks Emma for her order and shrugs, “Just nervous about going to my boyfriend’s family’s home for Christmas.”
No need to explain that she is going with both her boyfriends to Alec’s Nana’s house.
“His mom not approve?” Emma winces sympathetically.
That’s the standard cliché, isn’t it?
Parker shakes her head. Nana is sharp and no-nonsense, but she’s also warm and welcoming. She’s gentle about Parker’s quirks and always ready with an explanation if Parker has a question. It’s more she’s nervous about Alec’s siblings. Breanna is the one that she emails, texts, and calls regularly, but they’ve only met in person once and what if the closeness they’ve developed over the last few months is gone when they’re in each other’s physical space? She can’t even remember if Breanna likes hugs or not.
“More worried about impressing his siblings,” Parker tries.
Why didn’t she just accept the out and then accept the platitudes about difficult in-laws? She’s not always a fan of clichés, but they serve a purpose. She’s not friends with Emma. Emma is who she buys coffee and donuts from regularly and exchanges niceties with. Emma doesn’t need to know the details of her life, probably doesn’t even want to know the details of her life, except Emma asked.
“Little kids or adults?” Emma continues.
“Some of both?” Parker tries to answer. It changes, depending on who Nana is fostering at any given point, though Alec treats everyone who comes through Nana’s door as a welcomed sibling. Parker is trying to do the same. She’s relatively sure that’s why Eliot is baking several different kinds of cookies and treats to bring with them. Maybe she doesn’t need to worry about Breanna and her having the same dynamic in person because Breanna will be distracted by Eliot’s treats.
“We’re bringing cookies,” Parker says decisively. “Most people like cookies.”
“There’s always more donuts,” Emma tempts.
Parker agrees, picking up her items and thanking her again.
“Good luck,” Emma tells her before moving onto the next order.
Parker makes her way home trying not to dwell. She doesn’t usually dwell like this.
She takes a deep breath when she gets into their apartment and feels herself relaxing. She loves the smell of chocolate and with Eliot baking the smell is infusing through the whole apartment. She makes her way into the kitchen, leaving the coffee and donuts on a unused counter, before hanging up her coat and taking off her shoes. She washes her hands and asks Eliot if he needs help, but he shakes his head before pressing a kiss to her cheek. She grabs her coffee and picks out a donut, before sitting at the breakfast bar.
“Alec still sleeping?” she asks.
“He was up late,” Eliot shrugs. “And he’s not nervous about going home.”
“You’re nervous about going to Nana’s too?” Parker frowns, setting her donut down on the napkin she grabbed for it. Why didn’t she realize Eliot is nervous too?
Eliot takes a bite of his donut, then indicates the cookies he’s got cooling, the cookies he’s go lined up to go in the oven and the general mess of 'Eliot is baking' that’s taken over the kitchen.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t realize it was stress baking,” Parker sighs.
Eliot makes his way over and hugs her. “You didn’t need to. I didn’t realize you were nervous.”
“I know Nana knows and approves,” Parker says, trying to work out why she’s so nervous. “And I know she’ll be happy to see us, but I want it to go well and I think I’m making friends with Breanna, but what if I’m wrong? And it’s a lot of people in one house.”
“So many people,” Eliot agrees as he takes a seat next to her.
“It’s going to make you hypervigilant?”
“It’s a lot of people,” Eliot sighs before taking a sip of his coffee.
“We’re both going to be exhausted when we get back,” Parker realizes. “Alec is going to fuss.”
“It’s what he does.”
“Is it?” Alec asks as he joins them and picks up his coffee. “Why do I need to be fussing?”
“We’re going to be tired after getting home from Nana’s,” Parker explains.
Alec nods. “That’s one of the reasons we got a hotel room instead of trying to stay there. So we have a place to decompress after all the noise.”
“You said it was because you didn’t want to sleep on a couch,” Parker reminds him.
“I don’t want to sleep on a couch either,” Eliot grumbles.
“The not sleeping on a couch defiantly played into it,” Alec agrees as he considers the donuts.
“Hey, did you order Breanna’s donuts? There was a note,” Parker remembers to ask.
Alec grabs his phone and frowns at it briefly. “Found the confirmation email. Can you delete the note or do you want me to?”
“I’ve got it,” Parker reassures as she finishes her donut. She points out what donut she wants next and happily accepts it from Alec. She opens her Alec list and deletes the note.
“When do we pick up that quilt for Nana?” Eliot asks.
Alec checks his phone again. “I can pick it up later today. I still can’t believe she didn’t charge more for a handmade quilt.”
“I think she’s still grateful for our help,” Parker points out.
“Just because she’s a former client didn’t mean she had to give us a discount,” Eliot says. His timer goes off and he gets up to pull out the cookies. She watches him for a moment, pulling out the cooked ones and putting in a new batch. Eliot resets the timer. Parker glances at Alec and realizes he’s watching Eliot to.
“Is this stress baking?” Alec asks.
Eliot glares. “I’ll talk about it when I’m ready to talk about it.”
Alec scrunches his nose and Parker sighs. He glances at her.
“It’s helping,” Eliot defends. “I don’t actually want to talk about this yet.”
“I’m nervous about seeing Breanna in person again,” Parker confesses.
Alec steps close and gives her a hug. He kisses the top of her head. Parker feels herself start to relax again.
“Have you tried telling her?” Alec suggests.
“Would that be a weird thing for me to do?” Parker asks.
“No,” Alec frowns. “I don’t think so and if it is I think Breanna would appreciate it?”
Parker nods and texts Breanna, confessing her anxiety. Breanna’s answer is quick and an agreement, basically ‘me too’ with several exclamation points. Breanna asks if she can hug Parker when she sees her. Parker considers this, then sends back, ‘Ask me when you see me? I want to say yes, but I might not want hugs that day,’ because most of the time she likes hugs, but there are times she really doesn’t.
There are several more conversations about anxiety in the next few days. They make a list for each person at Nana's and double check their gifts. They pack up so many baked goods. Their car is full. Thankfully when they get to the hotel they only have to take their bags and drop them off because they’re heading to Nana’s to unload the rest of the car and have dinner.
Breanna is on the porch, bouncing slightly in excitement. Parker grins when she sees her. She’s taller.
“Are you taller than me?” Parker asks.
“No. I don’t think so,” Brenna grins. “Hugs?”
Parker opens her arms and agrees. Breanna launches herself forwards and the two cling to each other tightly.
“I’m so happy to see you,” Breanna says.
“I’m happy too,” Parker agrees.
“Do you need help unloading the car?” Breanna asks.
“Yes, we’ve got so many things.”
“Did Eliot stress bake again?” she whispers. Parker nods. Breanna’s eyes light up with happiness. “There is going to be so much good food!”
“Nana is probably going to insist he helps in the kitchen,” Alec agrees as he leans down and accepts a hug, but doesn’t let go of the box he’s carrying.
“That would be an honor,” Eliot comments as he smiles at her, carrying his own box. Breanna grins at him before running to get the door. Parker smiles, before going back to the car to grab a box. The next few days will be exhausting, but fun.
