A Possibility:

The restaurant is fancy in a way that makes Carter wonder if he’s even going to be able to afford a salad. Not that his budget is tight at the moment, but he only has so much set aside for going out and food. Maybe he can cut back on groceries, he’d rather do that then cut back on time with his team. He really hopes his mental calculations aren’t coming across as discomfort as he’s led to a table that’s in a section that isn’t busy.

They’re almost alone. The man he’s meeting stands. He's shorter than Carter, almost bald, except for the gray hair on the side of head. There’s something distinguished about his mustache. Carter didn’t even know mustaches could be distinguished. He holds out a hand. “Alfred Pennyworth.”

Carter takes his hand and shakes. “Carter Grayson, but you already know that.”

“Indeed.”

They sit.

“Please order what you’d like, my employer is paying,” Alfred encourages.

Carter blinks, then frowns. Recently they’ve had several private investors try to woo the team into letting them pay for things, but he and the team have agreed they don’t want anyone telling them who and how they can save people. “I thought you said this was personal?”

“It is,” Alfred agrees. “I thought a nice meal would help us ease into what might be a more difficult conversation, but if it’s easier to order than have a conversation I can adjust.”

“I’d rather not wonder what this is about any longer than I need to,” Carter decides.

“Very well,” Alfred agrees as he opens his menu. Carter takes the hint and opens his menu too. After they order Alfred pulls out his phone, opens it, and pulls up a picture. He slides the phone across the table. Carter raises his eyebrows because the guy in the picture looks similar enough to him that they could be related. Same nose, same cheekbones, same lips. Almost the same face shape, though Carter thinks he’s got more forehead. The guy has black hair too, instead of Carter’s burnet.

“I’m sorry,” Carter says. “I don’t know who this is.”

“His name is Richard Grayson, he goes by Dick. He’s my employer's adopted son. My employer believes you may be cousins.”

“I don’t have a lot of relatives,” Carter says neutrality. “But if you want to run a test I don’t think Captain Mitchell would object. Actually I may have to ask Dr. Fairweather too. I think they’d both have an opinion.”

“Distant relatives, through a great grand-parent,” Alfred clarifies. “I can be in town for a few days while you get permission.”

Carter nods, then tilts his head. “Can I ask you why you approached me without him here?”

Alfred smiles at him. “We’re protective. He’d likely befriend you before we could even approach you about a test and then be disappointed if you're not related.”

Carter doesn’t reply, waits until their server sets their drinks down, then says, “That makes sense. I’d probably get attached to the idea too, but I’ll try not to.”

Carter takes a sip of his drink hoping he doesn’t come across as nervous. He doesn’t think Captain Mitchel or Dr. Fairweather will object to him doing a DNA test, but they’re protective so he does need to ask.

“Who’s your employer?” Carter asks. “You’ve mentioned them, but haven’t said who they are.”

“Bruce Wayne,” Alfred answers.

“I have no idea who that is,” Carter admits.

“He’ll find that refreshing,” Alfred reassures as the server brings their food. For the rest of the meal Alfred asks him questions about himself and shares anecdotes about Dick. After the meal they exchange numbers and Carter promises to get back to him as soon as he can.
