It’s Eliot’s grumble of discontent that gets Alec’s attention as he’s heading out the door. He pauses at the sight of Eliot carrying the groceries with a kitten crawling up his pant leg. Alec shifts his phone so he can take several quick pictures, even pausing to take one of the exasperation Eliot’s face.
“You could help,” Eliot suggests.
Alec sends a few of the pictures to Parker, then slips his phone into his pocket, before attempting to take the bags from Eliot.
“Take the cat,” Eliot shakes his head, still holding onto the groceries.
“That cat chose you,” Alec points out, instead of pointing out that the cat if probably teeming with fleas and he’s not dealing with that. The kitten screams. Alec nods. “See the cat wants you and not me.”
With a huff Eliot releases the groceries and then gingerly pries the kitten off his pants by the scruff of the neck. Eliot lifts the kitten and the two of them regard each other. Eliot huffs again before tucking the kitten into his jacket. Alec swallows his protests. Eliot rolls his eyes. “I’ll throw my clothes in the wash and take a shower after we find her mom.”
“It’s a girl?”
“We’re finding her mother, she’s going back to her mother,” Eliot declares at the same time Parker comes careening out their door demanding to see the kitten.
“Eliot says we’re not keeping her,” Alec interjects.
Parker nods. “I still want to see her!”
“Wait,” Alec frowns. “Aren’t you going to argue about keeping her?”
Parker blinks at him in the way that means she hadn’t considered this an option. Eliot stills, he’d been about to step off the sidewalks to check the alley near where they’re standing. Alec hasn’t noticed any stray cats near their bar, but he’s definitely heard them from their apartment above the bar. Maybe they need to figure out how many cats are around and make sure they’re fixed? They do not need to be overrun by kittens. One they can probably handle, and between the three of them, if they need someone to watch the kitten while they’re on a job that shouldn’t be too difficult. Alec knows people board their dogs when they’re away, can you do the same with cats?
Eliot sighs and asks Parker, “Have you ever had a pet?”
“They cost money,” Parker protests.
“I think we have enough money we can handle the expense of one kitten,” Alec puts in.
“It might belong to someone else,” Parker counters.
“It’s definitely a stray,” Eliot says.
“And the cat distribution system at work,” Alec jokes.
Eliot rolls his eyes, but it’s fond and Alec smiles at him. Eliot gives him a soft smile in return.
“I’ve heard of that,” Parker puts in. “We could really keep her?”
The look of hope on Parker’s face means they’re both going to say yes.
“I’ll double check no one is looking for a…what kind of cat is she?” Alec asks.
“Calico, I think long hair,” Eliot puts in as he opens his jacket to peek at the cat. Parker shifts closer and smiles down at the kitten.
“She’s so cute!” Parker exclaims. “What do we need to do?”
“We’ll need to clean her, and I should wash these clothes and myself after. We don’t want to bring fleas into the place,” Eliot explains.
Parker nods, pats her pockets, then locates her phone. “Okay, you do that. Alec put the groceries away and check to see she doesn’t belong to anyone else. I’m going to the pet store to get a few supplies. I’m sure I can look up what we need just to make sure she’s comfortable overnight.”
“I’ll make a vet appointment for her too,” Alec volunteers.
Parker grins, gives them both a swift kiss, and then is on her way down the sidewalk.
“This is definitely a stray,” Eliot mutters. “I didn’t think we had stray cats.”
“I thought I heard some animal out here and assume they were cats,” Alec shrugs.
Eliot huffs. “I figure if we acquired a pet it’d be the 'find it lurking around and start feeding it before coaxing it inside' variety, not a kitten throwing herself at me.”
“So you wanted a pet,” Alec infers.
Eliot shrugs. “I suspected Parker never had one and it’s something she’d enjoy.”
Alec agrees until when they’re back in their apartment and he’s comparing vets in the area trying to decide who to make an appointment with and Eliot hands him the ball of tri-colored fluff. She starts to scream. Alec hands her back.
“I was going to take a shower,” Eliot says, taking a step back. The kitten continues to scream.
“I think she likes you better than me,” Alec says.
“She’s cold, wrap her more firmly in the blanket and keep her warm,” Eliot instructs as he heads towards the shower. The kitten continues to scream. Alec sighs and starts trying to dry her off more. She’s mostly dry and so fluffy, but also screaming.
“He’ll be back soon,” Alec protests. “Look, there are three of us, you’ll have to get used to all three of us.”
The kitten continues to scream. Alec frowns. He knows Eliot’s clothes are in the washer and he’s not starting it until he’s done with his shower, but what’s in the dryer? He thinks Eliot put in a load of towels before heading to the store and he’s relatively sure Parker moved the towels to the dryer. Alec checks, then switches the towel he’s using for a warm one. The kitten is still screaming. Alec continues to dry her and inspect her for fleas that escaped the bath Eliot gave her. He thankfully doesn’t find any fleas. The kitten continues screaming her protests at him. Alec sighs as he looks down at her. She’s a ball of screaming fluff, but she also looks distressed. He gets a washcloth and wraps her tightly in it. She finally settles.
“What did you do?” Eliot calls from the bathroom.
“Swaddled her,” Alec says. “It apparently works on kittens too.”
Eliot joins him, still drying his hair and only a towel around his waist. Alec is momentarily distracted by a drop of water make it’s way down Eliot’s chest. Eliot smirks at it. Parker comes bustling in at the moment, carrying several bags.
“I thought about names!” Parker announces.
They are definitely keeping the kitten.
