Challenge #7

Promote/Rec/Sing the Praises* of Yourself!

I like that I've been running a Power Rangers Femslash exchange. This will be the tenth year. I created a DW comm for it last year [community profile] prfemslashex and I'm hoping to be able to promote other toku centered exchanges on there. Or even other femslash centered exchanges. I'm always happy to see more femslash.

I really like a fic I wrote for I wrote for the [community profile] piningexchange last year. It's a Rogue One everyone lives and nobody dies fic from Stordan Tonc's pov. He's a minor character in the movie and book adaptation. I was expecting maybe 5k when I plotted it out and was a little overwhelmed because I don't often write longer fic and certainly hadn't written that much for a Star Wars fic before. It's a little over 10k and Stordan Tonc/Bodhi Rook. I liked the background I gave Stordan, that he's dealing with PTSD while still trying to find ways to help the Rebellion and falling for Bodhi. I'm still working my way through supplemental material and wasn't sure who to grab for the medic or mechanic I needed, but I think taking Carter from Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue and Damon from Power Rangers Lost Galaxy worked. The fic is here.

I didn't expect to come out of the MCU movie Endgame shipping Nebula and Rhodey, but when I got them as a prompt for the [community profile] mcu_exchange I really liked the way I wrote Nebula and Rhodey bonding and Nebula working through her trust/identity issues. It's a bit of 3k and is here

Challenge #6

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you.

One Beta request and a list of prompts, all Star Wars so cut for possible spoilers.

Challenge #5

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've briefly interacted with and friend/follow them.

I've been trying to do this, especially when reading fics lately. On a long multichaptered fic I tend to just consume the whole thing and then leave a kudos and sometimes a comment. I've been trying to get better about leaving a comment on each chapter since I know there are details that I'll love that I won't remember to comment on if I wait until the end.

I've also been more interactive one Twitter.

Challenge #4

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

1. I have been betaing books for one of my author friends and decided I wanted to work with more than one author. So goal would be to beta for a second author. I took steps towards that, talking to another friend who writes about betaing the book she wants looked over.

2. Work on betaing as soon as I get the fic/book. Sometimes I get burned out, especially when I'm busy with school, and I let a beta sit there for longer than I should. I need to get better at doing the beta as soon as I can or emailing the writer letting them know I'm not at a place where I can, even though I said that I would.

3. My longest fic is All is Not Lost and it's 15,788 words. I'd like to write a story that is 30,000 to 50,000 words.

4. I owe people fic. I would like to sit down, write out what I owe and then finish all those fics by the end of the year.

5. A few of the fics I've written I intended to go back and write sequels to. I'd like to at least start one of those sequels this year.

Challenge #3

Pimp Your Favorite Communities, Fests or Challenges!

[community profile] 100fandoms is proving to be an interesting challenge. I've currently written nine fics, a lot of them crossovers, but I've having fun trying to think of new fandoms to play in. I'm looking forward to seeing where I explore to finish this challenge.

[community profile] fandomweekly is fun when I find the time to participate. I've really enjoyed some of the standalone I've written for this.

[community profile] fan_flashworks has also proven a great way to prompt myself and come up with new ideas. I was starting to feel stagnant, as though all I was writing for exchanges and this combined with the above comm started helping me write for myself again.

[community profile] chocolateboxcomm was one of my favorite exchanges to participate in last year, though I need to get out of the mindset that my fic has to stay at 300 words. I wrote some fun triple drabbles, but could've explored a bit more of the worlds I was writing in.

Also [community profile] worldbuildingex is currently in the nomination phase!

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish history.

I'm not really sure where to start. My dad's love of Star Trek? My aunt's love of anything remotely geeky and need to take all her nieces and nephews on adventures? My grandma making sure my brother and I got to watch Batman (the Adam West version), Gillian's Island, X-men the Animated Series, Gargoyles, etc? My grandpa's enthusiasm for Tarzan? I shed a few tears when I inherited his entire Edgar Rice Burroughs collection.

Do I talk about the characters that shaped me? Princess Leia from Star Wars. I will always remember the way I felt the first time I saw her grab that blaster and rescued her rescuers. She had long gorgeous long hair and I wanted to be as badass as she was with gorgeous long hair. Northstar from Marvel Comics who I discovered as I was having a difficult time coming out. His take no BS attitude really helped me find confidence in voicing who I am. Michael from Queer as Folk who was geeky and gay and sometimes struggling with his confidence, but tried to be true to himself. He gave me hope because I was geeky and queer and constantly struggling with my self-confidence. There are so many more, but these are the three that first come to mind.

I started RPGing and really getting into online fandom when I was thirteen. I'm so grateful that the mods were so nice to me. My strongest memories are the few times I made missteps and they calmly took the time to explain to me how I'd made a misstep and what I could do to correct it. I did some X-men RPGS, mostly as Jubilee and Jono. I joined a Power Rangers RPG and met one of my best friends.

I wrote my first fic when I was sixteen. Roswell. Never posted. One of my English teacher critiqued it as too cliché and I moved on. The first fic I posted with in the BtVS fandom. I was also very much into Marvel and Jean-Paul/Bobby for a long time. It's been Power Rangers and MCU as my main fandoms for awhile. I adore Legends of Tomorrow and somehow last year (I read Ahsoka by E.K. Johnston) I fell into becoming a bit obsessed with Star Wars.

Do I talk about getting into Power Rangers? I started dating a woman in college who really loved Power Rangers while I was into Stargate. We attempted to share. She wasn't interested in Stargate, but then I watched Power Rangers Ninja Storm and I knew I would love this show and characters. The first show I saw as it was airing was Jungle Fury. I came to the fandom a bit late. I have vague memories of the Green with Evil saga as it aired, but that's it for early me. Thankfully I was on LJ as the time and then joined an RPG. I made friends. I watched more of the shows. I started writing fic. I introduced friends to each other. They introduced their friends to me. It's always great when you meet someone by having a friend go 'You two both like this character that few people like, you should be friends'! So lost the girlfriend, but gained a lot of great friends!

The first convention I went to was Morphicon 2. I've since discovered several nearby cons. I like to go to Motor City Con and Steel City Con. I recently started taking a few more days around a con to explore the area I'm in. This year I went to The Shedd in Chicago and Universal (Harry Potter!) in Orlando.

I joined Geek Girl Brunch (so sad it ended) a couple years ago and through that have made several local geeky friends. We get together for movie nights and food adventures. Last November I took a road trip to NYC with two friends to see the Percy Jackson musical. I'm so excited that they're getting another tour and can't wait to see it again!

Challenge #1

In your own space, introduce yourself!

Hi. I go by Rivulet027 on here, AO3, Twitter, Discord, Tumblr, Instagram, and Goodreads (I could defiantly use some more Goodreads friends!). I still have accounts under this name on LJ and fanfic.net. You can call me Riv for short. The name is a play on the meaning of a nickname I had in high school and the year my grandma was born, 1927. I've been using it for about twenty years.

My main fandoms are Power Rangers, Legends of Tomorrow, and Marvel, but I've spent a good part of last year falling down the Star Wars rabbit hole. I read Ahsoka by E. K. Johnston and then promptly need to just consume as much canon as possible (please feel free to rec me things). Thankfully when I asked one of my friends, who is really into Star Wars, where to start she handed me all four seasons of Rebels (I just started S4) and told me to read the X-wing series (I'm currently on book 2) and the Doctor Aphra comics (currently on volume 3). Chopper is currently my favorite character from Rebels. I've also just started to work my way through the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics.

I like to writing crossovers and rarepairs.

In my personal life I'm starting school next week so I can finish up my BSN this year. I'm already working as a nurse with an associate degree and it's a requirement of my employer that I acquire my bachelors in nursing. They won't take into account I already have three associate degrees (Art, Science, and Nursing) and two bachelors (Psychology and English).

In my spare time I like to go on food adventures with my friends who live near me, go to conventions, as well as read and write. I love going to a local writing group when I have the time. I also like to beta when I can.
[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 3: In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

It was difficult to decide what to write about. At first I was like let me flail about Legends of Tomorrow because it's so good, and then I was all so was clone!Jack O'Neill and there needs to be so much more fic about him. I think though I'm going to write about a book I read this year.

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang. If you like Pretty Woman you should read this book. My review on Goodreads is basically me keysmashing and screaming Reverse Pretty Woman as loudly as I can. I have recommended this book to so many friends, and a friend even gave it away at the book swap our Geek Girl Brunch does every year. I listened to it on audiobook through Hoopla and it's just fantastic. Stella decides she needs professional help when it comes to dating and sex so she hires Michael and then they precede to fall for each other.

Day 4: Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

Yep, did this.

Day 5: In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

[community profile] fandomcalendar This is a place where people post links to challenges and exchanges. It's a good place to find different placed to write, as well as promote your own exchange.

[community profile] fandomweekly A weekly challenge community that just rebooted. Come play with some fun challenges!

[community profile] worldbuildingex A worldbuilding fic exchange that just open for nominations.

[community profile] fandomtrumpshate I just participated in Marvel Trumps Hate and that was a blast. I'm looking forward to the fic I won, the fic I'm writing, donated to a good cause, and had people donate to a good cause. This community of a similar vein and looks like a lot of fun.
[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 2: Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

1. Knowledge and the Powers by [personal profile] tptigger. Danny finds out he's a wizard, a Teen Wolf/So You Want to Be a Wizard crossover. I really like how this fic gets Danny involved in the goings on around Beacon Hills. Also Prada is awesome.

2. Not in Kansas (anymore) by nirejseki. Martha Kent kinda sorta adopts a young Mick Rory. He and Clark consider themselves brothers.

3. firefly by peradi. BB8's pov while the team is exploring Scarif. R2-D2 is a swear bot. Everyone loves Finn. K-2SO gets rescued. This is pre Solo's release.
[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day One: Happy Place

Fandom probably. It's where I made a lot of the friends I've had for years. It's the people I've vented to when everything else in my life was going wrong. It's reading that one fic you love over and over again. It's seeing your favorite characters go on new adventures. It's having people to talk to about your favorite characters.
